A thriving suburban community off Reisterstown Road northwest of Baltimore
Just 14 miles from downtown Baltimore, Pikesville is part of the increasingly popular North Baltimore County suburbs, where homebuyers come to enjoy the benefits of having access to the city without so many of the hassles of urban life. “It’s a beautiful place to live. It’s very family-oriented,” says lifelong Pikesville resident Laura Rosen, a veteran Realtor with Long and Foster Real Estate. “It’s convenient to go downtown. It’s centrally located on the Baltimore Beltway and convenient to get to Washington, D.C.” Crime statistics for Pikesville are not readily available.
Home to the largest concentrated population of Jewish residents in the Baltimore area, Pikesville has several synagogues, Jewish private schools and dozens of kosher shopping and dining options. “You have to live close to synagogue because they have to be able to walk there,” Realtor Tabitha Richardson, principal owner of NextHome Leaders and a one-time Pikesville resident. “It’s [Pikesville] on two sides of the interstate. The side near Owings Mills is more costly. The other side is more affordable. People like to live off Reisterstown Road because it has easy access to 695. That area is pretty hot.”
Reisterstown Road’s restaurants offer plenty of kosher options alongside their daily menu items, and these nearby highways make it convenient for commuters to head to Baltimore for work. The suburb is also known for its parks, historical sites, golf courses and local art. The community may look small, but it is home to roughly 33,000 residents, with most identifying as descendants of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.

Commutes southeast to Baltimore on the Baltimore Beltway
Pikesville is not pedestrian-friendly, and most residents prefer to get around via car. Interstate 695, locally known as the Baltimore Beltway, loops around the greater metropolitan region and is the main major thoroughfare passing through town. Jones Falls Expressway, I-83, and Northwest Expressway, I-795, flank opposite ends of the city to the east and west, respectively. “I-795 will take you off the loop and it takes you to Owings Mills,” Richardson says. “It can get very crowded during rush hour time. Reisterstown Road can get busy with people trying to get to work and get back home.” Maryland Transit Administration offers bus service on Reisterstown Road, Old Court Road, Milford Mill Road and Smith Avenue. Commuters can also catch a train at Old Court Station and reach Baltimore in about an hour. Because of its proximity to major highways and Reisterstown Road, Pikesville residents may be subjected to loud traffic noise.
695 and I-83 both run through Pikesville, MD perfect for commutes.
