The Preserve at Jordan Lakes is home to a golf club of the same name, which has helped to make the residential community a sought-after location. The semi-private The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club has an 18-hole Davis Love III-designed golf course and a restaurant called The Grille that specializes in chicken salad sandwiches. “Outside visitors sometimes come to eat at The Grille, but it mainly caters to golfers,” says Lucas Mowl, Head Golf Professional at The Preserve. “We also have a full driving range and practice facility, and we do junior camps over the summer.” Near the golf club, The Preserve Clubhouse has a fitness center, an outdoor community pool, a playground, a basketball court, tennis courts and paved walking trails that merge with sidewalks throughout the community.
Many of The Preserve’s neighborhood events are hosted at the clubhouse and pool area. The community offers family-friendly events, including the Pool Opening Party, a Children’s Halloween Party and a Children’s Party with Santa. There are also adults-only clubs, like Preserve Ladies Golf Association, Evening Pickleball and Red, White & Brew Couples Wine Club.

Upon entering The Preserve. residents pass a royal blue neighborhood sign decorated with tan stone, which matches many houses found in the community. The Preserve Trail takes locals further into the neighborhood, veering off into Bear Tree Creek or branching onto different courts and cul-de-sacs. Each street sign is custom-made to match the blue entrance sign, providing a coordinated aesthetic throughout. Green and leafy trees dot manicured lawns, and some properties that are situated on the golf course offer viridescent fairway views.
Common housing styles in The Preserve include 2,500- to 4,000-square-foot New Traditionals and Transitional homes that promote a more modern appearance. Some properties are built to resemble French estates, while others take on a more Farmhouse Revival influence. Houses in The Preserve were built between 2002 and 2025, featuring two-car garages and, in most cases, lot sizes of about a half-acre. Many also feature spacious back patio areas with hardscaping or inground pools. Price tags typically range from $725,000 to $1.35 million, and HOA fees can cost from $125 to $175 per month. There are also several lots of land available, from half an acre to two full acres. Depending on the location within the community and the size of the lot, land might cost between $20,000 and $300,000.

Summer days spent at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area
Nature lovers here have the benefit of being near Jordan Lake, a man-made reservoir that is part of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The 4,500-acre park area surrounds the almost-14,000-acre lake, featuring more than 1,000 campsites, 15 miles of hiking trails and several boat launches. The nearest boat ramp for residents in The Preserve is about 3 miles south of the neighborhood at Seaforth Beach. In addition to launching their boat, beachgoers can lounge along the sandy shores, play volleyball and walk along the wildlife trails. Jordan Lake is known to be a summer home for bald eagles, and parts of the nature trails jut out onto observation decks. The state park also has a playground and an amphitheater that sometimes hosts live music, though no concert series has been announced for the 2025 summer season. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area draws a summer crowd for the annual Jordan Lake Freedom Fest, which celebrates the Fourth of July with music, food and a fireworks display over the lake.

Chatham County Schools serves students living in The Preserve. The school district receives a B-plus rating from Niche and has won Best Communities for Music Education from the NAMM Foundation for six years in a row. Students can begin their public-school education at North Chatham Elementary before advancing to Margaret B. Pollard Middle, both of which hold an A-minus. They can then transition to Northwood High, which receives a B-plus.
A 15-mile trip north of The Preserve leads to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This public institution is well-known for its rigorous academic offerings and its competitive athletic programs. It’s not uncommon for residents to put on their Carolina blue and head up to the campus to cheer on one of the university’s teams.

Big Woods Road, a two-lane road that bends along the west side of Jordan Lake, is the only way for residents to enter and leave The Preserve. They can take Big Woods for about 8 miles north, where it meets the small town of Fearrington, which has a trendy downtown area with retail establishments, restaurants and a resort hotel. In addition to Food Lion, the Fearrington Village shopping area features local eateries and niche boutiques. The Belted Goat is a coffee shop with a breakfast and lunch menu, and The Fearrington House Restaurant is a fine-dining establishment inside a colonial-style chateau. Nearby, McIntyre’s Books is a popular spot for a new book or a unique gift. The retail village is also home to Fearrington Farmers Market, held each Tuesday afternoon year-round.

The community is car-dependent, as no public bus or train system services the area. Big Woods Road connects residents to U.S. Route 64 a mile south and to U.S. Route 501 around 8 miles north. Once residents reach Route 64, Raleigh is a 30-mile drive east, and once they hop onto Route 501, Chapel Hill is a 15-mile drive north. Residents can get to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, about 25 miles away, from either Route 64 or Interstate 40, both of which intersect with Big Woods Road after a 15-mile drive north.
