Competitive prices in Pittsburgh’s hills
Tucked between the trees of Pittsburgh's West End, Banksville is a charming suburb with downtown proximity. Though the neighborhood is an excellent place to look for houses that won’t break the bank, it was actually named in honor of its developer’s wife. Under its new moniker, Banksville transitioned from a prosperous farming community to a booming mining town and then to the verdant suburb it is today. Homes here sit on rolling hills along quiet, sloping streets. They’re surrounded by mature oaks, maples and redbuds that bring many shades of red, yellow and orange to the neighborhood every fall. Dense woodlands border the neighborhood and buffer noise from U.S. Highway 19 — referred to locally as Banksville Road — and Interstate 376, which converge on the community’s north side.

Midcentury charm all around
“The closer you live to downtown, the smaller the lots get,” says Bob Dini, a local Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “Those houses were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s when the steel mills and glass factories were booming. Banksville has a suburban feel to it despite being only 3 miles from the downtown corridor.” Although a handful of properties in Banksville date back to the 1910s, the area’s building boom really started in the ‘50s. So, also unlike communities closer to downtown, the properties aren’t “old-old,” Dini says. “The fact that these houses were built later means you actually have places to actually park.” Driveways and garages are common features of homes in Banksville. And although midcentury architecture’s streamlined but cozy look can be seen in many split-level and raised ranch-style residences, there are also classic designs, such as Colonial Revival and American Foursquare. List prices range from $157,000 to $396,000.
