Community centers and commuter perks south of Pittsburgh
While historic architecture, a hilly destination park and the convenience of Boggs Station are surface level selling points for Beltzhoover, the heart of this south Pittsburgh locality lies in the involved residents passionate about building up the neighborhood for the next generation. “Beltzhoover is not a dependent community, we are very much alive and very much together. A lot of younger leaders left, went to college and are coming back to keep giving back when they could have gone anywhere else in the world. It’s really happening,” says Kelli Shakur, founder of the FroGang Foundation who was born and raised in Beltzhoover. “I’m a recipient of what it looked like to be raised in a village. We want to give that to our youth and our elders.” As thousands of commuters fly through the Liberty Tunnels deep under the hill, Beltzhoover perches high above the Monongahela River Valley, weaving community gardens, centers and events into everyday life mere miles from downtown Pittsburgh.
Beltzhoover has beauty around every corner, take a look around and see for yourself.

Prewar homes on hilly blocks
Pittsburgh’s favored prewar architectural styles mingle along Beltzhoover’s hilly blocks, creating a two- and three-story skyline dominated by closely packed single-family homes with front-facing gables, multi-point Gambrel roofs and boxy American Foursquare silhouettes perched over front porches. Move-in ready homes sell for $50,000 to $190,000. Homes in need of serious rehabilitation sell for $17,000 to $70,000. Some blighted homes and vacant lots left to grow into urban prairie stand between long stretches of tidy front gardening and porch decor. Sidewalks line at least one side of most streets, some of which bear fresh concrete while others have been overtaken by neighboring yards and hillsides. Despite growing investor interest, most Beltzhoover residents still own rather than rent their homes.
The hilly terrain of Beltzhoover causes homes to need steps so locals can enter their homes.

Beltzhoover Community Days and FroGang community service
Several of Beltzhoover’s active community groups work together to put on events throughout the year, including the multi-day Beltzhoover Community Days that returns each July. “We do our own fundraising and use our own resources – there's bouncy houses, face paint, vendors, a basketball tournament, free water and hotdogs, a church service. Hundreds of people come in from out of town because they know they’ll get to see everybody there,” says Quincy Jones, President of the Beltzhoover Neighborhood Council. Shakur’s FroGang is among the busiest organizations in the neighborhood, taking on projects from youth empowerment Successful Sister Sessions to planting saplings to increase Beltzhoover’s urban tree canopy.

McKinley Park and the Blue Building
On Beltzhoover’s southern border, McKinley Park’s highest point is crowned with a playground and basketball court. Descending paved, forested walking paths, park-goers can find a skate park and several athletic fields at the lower portion of the park off Bausman Street. Warrington Park provides more options for recreation, including a seasonal spray park and recreation center known for its fitness center and role as the local Citiparks Summer Camp home base. Butterflies, botanists, bus passengers and bubbles swirl in a technicolor mural on the side of Beltzhoover Community Center 407, keeping watch over gardening beds the next lot over. “We call it the Blue Building, Quincy runs his programs out of there. They do a little bit of everything, gardening and ceramics, but you can also rent it out for baby showers and grad parties,” Shakur says.

Literally dodged a bullet getting out of a poorly flipped house bordering this neighborhood in Mt Washington. Had problems with squatters dealing drugs. Neighbors house was broken into twice in a week. Shootings and hearing gunshots were a too regular occurrence. Arson happened on a nearby occupied house.
