A mix of urban and natural landscapes
Historic red brick rowhouses with ornate gold detailing once occupied by railyard and slaughterhouse workers line the quiet streets in the heart of California-Kirkbride, a North Side neighborhood 4 miles outside of downtown Pittsburgh. Bordered by railroad tracks to the west and the Union Dale Cemetery and densely wooded residential pockets to the north and east, California-Kirkbride offers a mix of urban and natural landscapes. It’s also known for its picturesque yet affordable housing options and its extensive network of city steps, an iconic public stair system that connects communities, making public transit and amenities easier to access.

Historic Italianate townhomes
In California-Kirkbride, homes rest on flatter streets, rare for hilly Pittsburgh. The townhouses don’t typically have front yards but are spaced with side and backyards, while single-family dwellings tend to sit on larger plats with front yards large enough for small trees and shrubs. Overall, Pittsburgh is in a low inventory market, and California-Kirkbribe is no different. “The current market is lacking inventory, which is a major thing affecting California-Kirkbride and Marshall-Shadeland,” says Anthony Dasta, a Senior Advisor with Re/Max Select Realty’s Anthony Dasta Group. “We’ll see some more inventory come spring.” Italianate and Victorian-style townhouses featuring red brick facades, dormers and gold ornamentation on the windows and doors are among the most popular architectural styles here. Many of these homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, leading to the area being called the Old Allegheny Rows Historic District. These homes start around $140,000 and can exceed $760,000, increasing in price as they grow. Single-family craftsman foursquares with decorative rafters, bungalows with covered porches, Cape Cods with brick facades, and Queen Annes with turrets and bay windows also dot the streets. They are often situated on large lots with modest front yards and boast two to three bedrooms. They typically sell for somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000.

Shopping and dining throughout the Northside area
California-Kirkbride is largely residential, with the exception of a large USPS sorting center, a Rite Aid, a Dollar Tree, a handful of small service-related shops, and Quik-It Chicken, a fast-food fried chicken and fish joint located in the Valero Gas Station on the south end of town. For additional shopping and dining needs, residents can visit surrounding Northside communities. “It’s endless when it comes to the Northside and what’s available,” Dasta, who’s been selling in the Pittsburgh area for over five years, says.
