A neighborhood in transition
Twenty years ago, the Central Northside area was unsafe. And while it still rates high on the CAP Index (it scores a 9, higher than the national average of 4), it is undergoing a significant transition as developers build new homes and fix up old ones, new restaurants and bars sprout up, and newcomers take advantage of the community's proximity to Allegheny Commons Park, Allegheny General Hospital and Acrisure Stadium, which is within walking distance. "It draws people who like to do things and be close to the city," says Krista Lorenzo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and a Pittsburgh resident. "There are tons of great restaurants and bars; the newer homes have rooftop decks where you can see the whole city. Investors and developers are doing a lot of work there."
Lots of dining and shopping in the neighborhood
For dining, residents have easy access to Nicky’s Thai Kitchen, located off Western Avenue and the winner of City Paper's "Best Thai Food” category since 2011. Max’s Allegheny Tavern off Suismon Street has served the community authentic German dishes since 1903. Federal Galley off Children’s Way is much newer, having opened in 2017, but is equally popular for its four distinct restaurants within a communal seating food hall. Groceries are available at Mayfly Market and Deli off Arch Street or at Giant Eagle, about a mile south of the neighborhood.
Mayfly offers fresh and high-quality produce.

Close to Randyland and the Mattress Factory
Culture vultures relish their proximity to two Pittsburgh art museums. Randyland is a free, outdoor, rainbow-painted spectacle of many found objects, including mannequins and welcome signs. “It’s amazing,” Lorenzo says. “It’s the most colorful thing you’ll ever see in your life.” Nearby, the Mattress Factory is more of a traditional art museum with multiple buildings featuring installations like Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror rooms.
When walking into Randyland you will be greeted with upbeat music and possibly Randy!
The Mattress Factory Museum is extraordinary and pushes the boundaries for the viewer and artist.

Brick rowhouses line the streets
Most of the homes in Central Northside are stately brick rowhouses, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and fully renovated. There are new builds, too, from the 2020s and sporting modern, boxy exteriors. Over half of neighborhood residents are renters, and some of these rowhouses have been converted to apartments, while others have remained single-family homes. However, despite the abundance of rental properties, those looking to buy will find many options to choose from, too. These homes sit on picturesque urban streets, with paver sidewalks and tall trees lining the narrow roads. Residents add shrubs near front stoops and plant colorful flowers in window boxes, which provide pops of color against the red-brown brick exteriors. Prices range from $260,000 for 1,700 square feet to $700,000 for 3,600 square feet for single-family homes. Those looking for fixer-uppers can find them for under $100,000, with varying square footage.
Another architecture style popular in Central Northside is townhouses.

Within walking distance from Allegheny Commons Park
Residents head to Allegheny Commons Park, which borders the neighborhood’s southern side, for fresh air and exercise. This sprawling green space is the oldest park in Pittsburgh and is reminiscent of Manhattan’s Central Park, with its abundance of open fields, tall trees and amenities. Locals take the many walking trails that wind throughout, and children burn off energy on the weekends at the playground. Pittsburgh’s National Aviary is in the park's center and is popular for events or bird-watching. Lake Elizabeth, also located in the park's center, offers many tranquil places to sit and relax.

Walkable streets, PRT buses and nearby highways keep resident moving
Central Northside is less than 2 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, which means fast work commutes or mid-week dining and bar-hopping excursions. To go farther, Interstate 279 and Route 65 are close by and connect to the rest of the state, and for those taking public transportation, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) bus stops dot major thoroughfares like North Avenue and Federal Street.

A mix of incomes and pretty decent place to live. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of shops close to homes and the traffic can be dreadful. Lots of public transit options to get to other parts of town.
