Redevelopment and walkability in the East End
Undergoing waves of redevelopment, blight and disinvestment throughout the 20th century, East Liberty has become a hotbed of commercial, tech company and housing development in the last few decades. “It's not just Google or Duolingo employees, all kinds of people are attracted to East Liberty,” says Maryann Bacharach, a Realtor at Howard Hanna with 37 years of experience in the area. “What they really want is to be able to walk places. There are so many restaurants and chains popping up.” Convenient to the bus line and 5 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, East Liberty continues to develop its own commercial and residential pull between the Google offices in Bakery Square and the hospitals and shopping districts in Shadyside.

Shopping and dining on Penn and Centre
Big box retailers are among East Liberty’s most high-profile developments, including a Target perched atop a parking garage, a former Whole Foods location slated to become a Fresh Market and the new Whole Foods located under contemporary office space at Liberty East. Down Centre Avenue, apartments crown first-floor businesses like Choolaah and AT&T. Down sidewalks lined by young trees, 20th century commercial buildings house Goodwill and the trendy, well-lit brunch spot, Square Cafe. Across the street, locals can ascend South Highland Avenue to a parking lot lined with big names like Chipotle and Pure Barre or head straight across the bridge to more shops and restaurants in Shadyside.
On Penn Avenue, Margaux plies patrons with specialty lattes and happy hour cocktails in their airy, houseplant-shaded dining room down the block from Jamil’s Global Village, a family-owned African clothing, art and skin care products store which has been a local staple since the 90s. The distinctive Gothic arches and carved stone spires of East Liberty Presbyterian Church decorate the skyline, visible throughout most of the neighborhood.

Flipped 20th century homes and contemporary construction
Walking down sidewalks on East Liberty’s residential blocks, locals pass a blend of architectural styles ranging from 20th century Victorian silhouettes to simple American Foursquares with fresh paint jobs to slim, contemporary new construction homes built within the last decade. “A lot of homes have been flipped, that’s the trend. People like East Liberty because they can find beautiful new construction at lower prices than Shadyside,” Bacharach says. Single-family homes sell for $200,000 to $900,000 depending on renovation levels and century of construction. Townhouses from the 60s and 70s sell for $100,000 to $270,000 while window-heavy contemporary designs sell in the $700,000s. Condos in renovated 19th century duplexes and tall industrial buildings near the business district sell for $250,000 to $460,000. Living in older brick apartment complexes, 21st century luxury units and flipped single-family homes, East Liberty residents are typically renters rather than homeowners.

Liberty Green and Garland parks
Saplings and park benches line sidewalks around Liberty Green Park, an oasis of new playground equipment and wide, grassy lawns surrounded by the Larimer/East Liberty Choice Neighborhood Development and the dilapidated spires of the former Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Next to the fire department, locals can head to a playground shaded by mature trees and the fenced-in basketball and tennis courts at Garland Park.

Wine Festival, Kelly Strayhorn and farmers markets
The East Liberty Chamber of Commerce puts on a Wine Festival each Fall, inviting connoisseurs and casual fans to sample different vintages, browse local vendors and order from food trucks while enjoying live music on Broad Street. At the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, patrons pay sliding scale ticket prices to access art exhibitions and theatrical performances in the historic Regent Theatre building. For fresh produce throughout the year, foodies spend Saturday mornings at the Farmers’ Market Coop of East Liberty.

There is a notable police presence in East Liberty/Morningside/Garfield. I have never directly interacted with them. My experience with the local fire department, (Station 8,) was a good one.

It is a fairly good neighborhood. It is being updated and renovated in so many ways but overall a nice place. centrally located to get from my job and schools.

They eradicate African Americans economically. Homes now cost more than Point Breeze but it jus was abandoned for 25 years. Some are 700,000 dollars renovated with cheap home depot renovations smh then overpriced. Whyte Surpremacy invaded East Liberty.
