'Engaged and active' community
Home to a new tech hub, Hazelwood, 4 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, is an active neighborhood with several community organizations and a growing commercial area. “It’s a place where the community is really engaged and active,” says Sonya Tilghman, the executive director of Hazelwood Initiatives, Inc. “It’s a beautiful neighborhood, close to the river with nice views of the city and Mon Valley.” Hazelwood Green is a space along the Monongahela River that is set to incorporate biking and walking trails along with workspaces for Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. The loss of LTV Coke Works, part of the steel industry, hit the neighborhood hard, but Hazelwood is on an upward trajectory. “The future of Hazelwood is bright,” says Nathaniel Nieland, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “They’re doing a lot to improve the community; there is lots of affordable housing there.” Hazelwood Initiatives, Inc. works to improve housing options by buying and renovating homes. The organization uses public programming to help homebuyers with mortgages and hosts monthly meetings to connect residents with these resources.

Commuting on I-376
Hazelwood has wide sidewalks and hills set with stairs for pedestrians. Most amenities are within walking distance, but the area remains car-dependent. Interstate 376 borders the neighborhood, and several bridges connect Hazelwood to neighboring communities. Public transportation is available along Second Avenue, Johnston Avenue, Hazelwood Avenue, Blair Street and Irving Street. The Pittsburgh International Airport is 22 miles away. The CAP Index crime score is a 6 out of 10, with a score of 9 for homicide. The national average is 4. “When you’re in the area, there are vacant lots,” says Tilghman. “That abandonment gives the impression of unsafety. It is not a dangerous zone, but it has the impression of being unsafe.” The city of Pittsburgh plans to address crime in the area by improving street lighting, building a public safety facility and making conflict resolution resources available to residents.
