An up-and-coming community in Pittsburgh
Homewood South, east of downtown Pittsburgh, feels tightly packed—and looks the part—with close-set single-family homes, townhouses, eateries and parks all sitting along blocks of tree-lined streets. Despite many challenges, Homewood South rises above. “It's a revitalizing area right now,” says Deanna Davis, Realtor with Keller William Exclusives who has been selling homes in the Pittsburgh area for nearly two decades. With the helping hand of community organizations and a business district of delicious restaurants, the city neighborhood continues to make leaps and bounds. The changes in Homewood South aren't limited to housing, dining and parks. Several community organizations are striving toward a brighter future, like the Homewood-Brushton YMCA, which provides resources for food security and tax preparation. It also gives students access to the arts and computer programming. “A decade ago, Homewood wasn’t very desirable, but now it’s more of an up-and-coming area,” says Alecia DiMatteo, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices who has lived in the area her whole life.

Gardening at Homewood-Brushton YMCA
When it’s time to head outdoors for exercise or other recreation, Homewood has options with improvements on the horizon, most notably at Homewood Park. “There are new park renovations approved. It’s going to be one of the biggest parks around,” Davis says. The city has invested $3.5 million into the park for a new football field, plaza, amphitheater, pool and playground, with completion estimated for Spring 2025. In the meantime, people go to Westinghouse Park to walk or bike on the paved pathways or let loose on the playground. Miss Mary’s Garden grows produce and offers education about gardening and cooking. The green space is part of the YMCA garden program, intended for community engagement. Athletes also visit the YMCA for organized sports and lessons, and to take advantage of the sauna. Golfers must travel 5 miles away to Edgewood Country Club to practice their swing.
