Grow with Larimer
The East End neighborhood of Larimer was once Pittsburgh’s Little Italy. And though remnants of that era can be seen in old storefronts and longstanding businesses, most have been lost to time. Today it’s a neighborhood in transition, thanks mainly to employers like Google and Duolingo. Nate Nieland, a longtime Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, says those two companies have infused Larimer with energy, people and money. And while Duolingo is near the neighborhood, Google has planted itself right in Bakery Square, the neighborhood’s most popular shopping area. “At the same time, they are trying to continue making affordable housing over there,” he says. “They don’t want to push people out.” Current residents look forward to seeing growth with the help of their community and city. “People care about each other. They pick up trash and build community gardens,” says Karen Jane Mcilwain, a local Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who grew up nearby in East Liberty. “If you’re interested in building a neighborhood and growing with a community, it’s really a great place.”

Bakery Square and Penn Avenue
An old cookie factory’s red-brick walls and spacious interior have been repurposed as Google office space right in Larimer’s own Bakery Square. Favorite retailers and new eateries have made a home in this shopping and business hub, from Anthropologie and Free People to City Kitchen and Alta Via Pizzeria. Closer to the heart of the community, LA Grocery is a small West Indian and American market perfect for cravings and last-minute ingredients. Larger stores, including Trader Joe’s, Target and Aldi, are roughly a mile away on Penn Avenue. This main road is studded by convenient and mouth-watering businesses alike. Showcase Barbeque serves a menu of cook-out staples that taste like mid-July. The restaurant’s homemade barbecue sauce keeps out-of-towners and locals coming back for more. KLVN Coffee Lab is a trendy spot with a muted, quiet setting, caffeinated beverages and delectable seasonal items. It’s a popular change of scenery for remote workers.

Larimer’s almost unbeatable prices
Prices are climbing in the East End. In the past, home values would plummet east of Stanton Avenue, a road that connects the upper East End to trendy riverside areas, Mcilwain says. “That’s not the case anymore. East Liberty is getting to Highland-Park-like prices, some houses selling for more than $950,000.” This makes Larimer an attractive choice for starter homes and investment properties in the East End, “especially if you don’t mind putting work into a home,” Mcilwain says. Its slanted streets are lined by fixer-upper and newly renovated properties originally built between the 1890s and 1920s. Single-family residences comprise most of the housing stock, but duplexes and townhouses are in the neighborhood as well. Architectural styles vary from Victorian Revival to Colonial Revival to American Foursquare. Overall list prices range from just under $100,000 to the mid $300,000s.
Larimer Pointe is a very important project that has Larimer appealing to many people.

The Larimer Community Garden
Larimer has a community garden where residents can grow vegetables, fruits and flowers, all while getting to know their neighbors. Those without a green thumb can head to the Liberty Green Park Farmers Market, which runs from May to November. Local vendors at this market sell fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods and more. It also accepts food stamps as a part of Just Harvest’s Fresh Access program. When no farmers market is going on, Liberty Green Park is still a wonderful green space to visit, home to a large playground and walking loop. Local kids also enjoy Larimer Playground, a city park with athletic fields, sports courts and, of course, a playground.

Since I was 6 years old I was in the east liberty area. I can say when I was young there was a lot of gang banging going on, abandoned house, empty store fronts, etc. Thought nothing good was gonna from staying. But I still choose to raise my kids in the area because grandmom always told me there will be life back in the area and 25 years later we have more jobs in the area ,better homes, and a host of new stores and hotels. Seeing this reminds me that east liberty is a beautiful place

I have lived her for 2 years. We own 2 houses in the Larimer area and we love our tenant and our neighbors. The neighborhood does still have crime but with police patrolling I have noticed it is down. The neighbors come together to keep empty lots clean and take care of each other. The issues seem to be with people coming into the neighborhood selling drugs, vandalizing, and stealing.
