City blocks defining Pittsburgh’s skyline
Tree-lined plazas buzzing with colorful pop-up events and the melodies of midday concerts. The sharp, reflective spires of PPG Place. Ornate, Gothic-inspired facades adorning the Union Trust Building and First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. At the center of the Golden Triangle, Market Square is the dazzling heart of the Steel City. “We open our condo buildings and invite people to go up for a tour. They’re from the suburbs or New Jersey or Florida, next thing you know, they’re living in the city,” says Mark Jennings, a downtown Pittsburgh real estate specialist and associate broker with Piatt Sotheby’s International. “People stop cutting grass and start enjoying life a little more.” With cultural hubs, global cuisines and Yinzer landmarks extending out in every direction, Market Square packs the ever-developing amenities of downtown Pittsburgh into flat city blocks stretching between the Allegheny and Ohio rivers.
PPG Plaza is a photogenic, tranquil place for visitors or workers who need a view for lunch.

Shopping and dining across Pittsburgh
In Market Square’s namesake plaza, Pirates and Steelers fans wait for a slaw and fry-stacked sandwich from Primanti Bros. before the game. Across the way, margaritas and tacos are served to patrons peering through Las Velas’ second-story windows into the busy square below. Blocks away in the Union Trust Building, brunch-goers sip lattes and cocktails at The Speckled Egg and reservation-holders settle in for a lamp-lit, white-tablecloth dinner in the upscale Eddie V’s Prime Seafood restaurant. While nightlife is bigger in the Strip District, Cultural District and South Side, spots like Forbes Tavern and Barcadia offer different vibes for the after-midnight weekend crowds.
First-floor storefronts house banks, convenience stores, boutiques and national retail chains. “There was so much excitement when Target moved into the old Kaufmann’s, it’s so busy they can’t keep the shelves stocked. I bet they wish they took the whole block, but Burlington got the right side with good old Five Below right in the middle,” Jennings says. More options for grocery shopping, dining, nightlife and retail shopping surround Market Square in the nearby North Side, Strip District and South Side neighborhoods.

Condos from $270,000
High-rise buildings stack Market Square’s condos up into the sky. The lowest prices are found in the Carlyle Building, a distinctive early 20th-century stone structure with a rounded corner. Prices range from $270,000 to $565,000 as square footage and floor levels rise. The Residences at Three PNC Plaza offer more modern, luxury condos, boasting open concept layouts, floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the skyline and prices of $1 million to $4.25 million. Three and four-figure monthly HOA fees cover amenities like the rooftop deck and dog park at The Lumière Residences and security services and fitness center at Piatt Place. Private parking garages and designated spaces are a coveted perk in some buildings. Market Square has a CAP Index crime score of 8 out of 10 compared to the national average of 4.

Verdant courtyards and the Three Rivers Heritage Trail
In pocket parks and courtyards like PPG Plaza and Mellon Square, office workers and passers-through relax on tree-shaded seats and soak in the sight and sound of decorative fountains. Heading toward the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers brings bikers and midday-strollers to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a broad, waterfront path traveling from distant riverside neighborhoods to the iconic Point State Park. “The bike trail connects to the Great Allegheny Passage. You can ride all the way to Washington D.C. but you’ve got to break it up into a few days and train for that – it's not exactly a Sunday ride,” Jennings says.
Mellon Square features beautiful water fountains providing a peaceful place for residents.
Three Rivers Heritage Trail wraps around the fountain at the Point.

Market Square markets, Cultural District entertainment
Cocoa sippers bundle up against the cold from mid-November through Christmas Eve to walk the Peoples Gas Holiday Market, an annual tradition that transforms Market Square into a Christmas village filled with dozens of garland-hung cottages selling seasonal gifts and decor. Mismatched vendor tents and a rotating lineup of local musicians take over the square on Thursday afternoons from May through October for the Market Square Farmers Market, inviting foodies to fill their stomachs and tote bags with local produce and meals prepared by nearby restaurants. Blocks away, the Cultural District’s performance venues supply a year-round program of entertainment, from traveling Broadway shows at the Benedum Center to dinner theater at the Greer Cabaret to soaring performances by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall.
During winter months, Market Square has a large ice skating rink open to the public.
Market Square is always bustling with residents grabbing lunch or passing though.

Walking, biking, PRT busing and the T
Thanks to blocks of sidewalks and a growing network of bike lanes, it’s a breeze to walk or bike from Market Square to diverse downtown destinations. “You can take the Roberto Clemente Bridge over to PNC Park – they installed beautiful LED lights on those Three Sisters Bridges. Symphony fans and comedy club guys all go to the Cultural District, there’s improvements to the Strip District Terminal – you can skeeter around to all of it in a few minutes. If you live downtown, you can really walk everywhere. It’s unsurpassed,” Jennings says. PRT buses run throughout Market Square, and the T’s blue, red and silver lines pass through multiple stations. Pittsburgh International Airport is 18 miles away through the Fort Pitt Tunnels for more distant travels.

Pittsburgh Public Schools, Point Park University
Pittsburgh Miller K-5 earns a C-minus from Niche, as does Pittsburgh Milliones 6-12. Budding creatives can apply and audition to attend Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, which earns a B-plus, a few blocks away from Market Square in the Cultural District. “We still have the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship, so if kids stay in city schools, they can get a huge contribution toward college education,” Jennings says. Point Park University blends with city blocks closer to the Monongahela River.
Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 is a magnet performing arts school.
Pittsburgh Miller K-5 is an African-Centered Academy.

The Parkway East bathtub
While Market Square is safe from the floods, the infamous Pittsburgh bathtub forms on the Parkway East and other low-lying riverside roadways during unusually heavy rain. Traffic detours can be a headache until waters recede.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
