A bustling college town filled with cultural amenities
Sand-colored academic buildings with intricate stonework and prominent Greek columns twine together with high-rise apartment buildings and meticulously designed historic homes to create North Oakland, a mixed-use suburban community just over 4 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. The neighborhood is an academic hub sandwiched between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Because of its proximity to major universities, the neighborhood is also brimming with beloved museums and the state-of-the-art Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Meticulously maintained historic homes
Carnegie Mellon University hugs the neighborhood’s east side, and the University of Pittsburgh comprises the southwest corner of the community, leading many college students to choose North Oakland as their home away from home. As such, rental properties are prominent here. But that doesn’t mean those looking to buy are without options. North Oakland boasts a variety of housing styles, from co-ops to condos to luxury single-family homes. The single-family homes are largely clustered between Bigelow Boulevard and Parkman Avenue, where homebuyers can find large, meticulously maintained historic homes with spacious, manicured lawns. Tudor Revivals with cream base coats and dark brown half-timbering dominate the area, popping up almost every other house. American foursquares with wide covered porches, Colonial Revivals with symmetric, minimalistic features, two-story bungalows with prominent dormers and Victorian dwellings with steep rooflines and dramatic turrets are also prominent. These homes range from $400,000 to well over $1 million, with a median price of $890,000. Condos offer a more affordable option, with small, one-bedroom units starting around $90,000 and large, three-bedroom units surpassing $1 million.
