Historical neighborhood with stately, traditional homes
Grand estates owned by some of the wealthiest families in Pittsburgh once lined Penn Avenue in the early 19th century. Point Breeze North, 8 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, continues this tradition, boasting large brick Colonial Revival style homes and dark blue International-style Foursquare homes built around the 1920s. “There are older homes, mostly, throughout the neighborhood,” says Nathaniel Nieland, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “An eclectic selection of different styles between modern and traditional. It’s such a great place. I would never be sad about living there.” While estates belonging to the likes of inventor George Westinghouse, ketchup creator Henry John Heinz and art collector and industrialist Henry Clay Frick are no longer present, their memory remains. In nearby Point Breeze, residents may learn about the history of the Frick family through The Frick Pittsburgh. The old Frick estate now houses a greenhouse, the Car and Carriage Museum and art pieces from the Frick’s private collection. Within Point Breeze North, Westinghouse Park was once the site of Westinghouse’s mansion, Solitude. The estate was demolished, but the 10-acre park is a community staple, hosting a jungle gym and walking trails surrounded by open green space with maple trees and cherry blossoms. “It’s a really charming place to be,” says Nieland. “Everyone’s out walking around with their dogs and kids.”
