All that jazz in Upper Hill
Walkable, centrally located and changing every day, Upper Hill sits on the north side of Pittsburgh’s Hill District, a well-known community that borders the beating heart of downtown — the Golden Triangle. This community has a rich history. Between the 1920s and ‘50s, the Hill District was a cultural, musical mecca booming with black-owned businesses. It was where Pittsburgh jazz players of that time could make a name for themselves, where bebop, hard bop and vocalese styles were born.
Upper Hill is more residential than its southern counterparts, Middle Hill and Crawford-Roberts. However, residents here are still within walking or biking distance of downtown Pittsburgh’s attractions, including the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.

American Foursquare and Victorians
“A lot of the housing in Upper Hill was built in the early to mid-1900s,” says Bob Dini, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Preferred Realty, who has been selling homes in the city for 35 years now. “They weren’t building homes on half an acre then. They were building homes to house those working in the steel mills and factories in and around the city center. So you have small lots, some small yards, but low outside maintenance.” The slanting streets of Upper Hill are lined by classic early 20th-century architecture like Victorians and Tudors, but more predominantly American Foursquares. Many of these blocky homes have been converted into condominiums and duplexes, allowing more folks to call Upper Hill home. While some homes feature short driveways, most residents rely on street parking. Overall list prices range between $28,000 and $797,000.

Robert E. Williams Memorial Park
Although life in Upper Hill is city-living to a tee, there are plenty of spots to enjoy nature and get a breath of fresh air. Robert E. Williams Memorial Park is a low-key green space with a picnic pavilion, playground and basketball court, but what makes this spot wildly popular is the stunning view of the city that can be seen at the top of the park’s hill where the reservoir is. On the neighborhood’s south side, the Herron Hill tennis courts are another frequented hub. Other parks nearby include West Penn Park and Frank Curto Park.

Butterjoint and Grandma B’s
Upper Hill is largely residential, so grabbing a bite to eat or running errands will take residents out of the neighborhood, but not by far. North Craig Street is less than a mile west of Upper Hill and is home to several delectable hubs, including Butterjoint, a hip spot popular for its craft cocktails and bar bites. An Indian grocery store, Bombay Food Market, also sits off this road, perfect for grabbing a few things for the pantry. South of Upper Hill, Grandma B’s Cafe is a community staple. This quaint, locally owned American diner has a quiet, homey atmosphere and mouthwatering breakfast items.

UMPC and downtown access
“The main appeals of this area are its walkability, proximity to downtown and proximity to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center facilities,” Dini says. The heart of Upper Hill is about a mile north of the University of Pittsburgh and a little under 3 miles from the Golden Triangle. Residents can also access public transportation thanks to the PRT bus stops throughout the neighborhood. For farther commutes, the closest ramp onto Interstate 579 is just down the hill off Bedford Avenue.
