About Pleasant Grove, AL

"The Good Neighbor City" just 10 miles west of Downtown Birmingham

Pleasant Grove, fondly referred to as “The Good Neighbor City,” lies in the tree-covered, rolling green hills of Jefferson County, just 10 miles west of Downtown Birmingham. While technically a city, Pleasant Grove feels more like a small-town community, with just one family-owned grocery store, a couple of gas stations and a few local restaurants. “A lot of people like it cause the area’s not commercialized like its neighbors – McCalla and Hueytown,” Lou Hill says. The local Realtor and owner of EPI Real Estate, Hill, lived in Pleasant Grove for 21 years and has decades of experience selling homes here. While “it’s slowly growing,” he says “what really hurt the area was the big tornado” of 2011. “So many homes were gone and trees had fallen; it really looked like a bomb went off.” Today, he says, “There’s a lot of open land for sale, and they’re building community storm shelters.” “The city is growing we just had a little setback; I mean to experience something like that and see what Pleasant Grove is now – it’s beautiful.”

Homes of all shapes and sizes with rising market values

Home styles in Pleasant Grove are anything but cookie-cutter. There are sprawling ranch-style houses next to bulky split levels and compact bungalows too. Most of the homes date back to the mid-twentieth century, but some boxy Cape Cods and new traditional houses were added during the 1980s to early 2000s. Even newer vernacular homes feature a mix of craftsman and ranch-style architectures. Today, most of the listings range between $150,000 to $350,000 with an average home value of $214,000 – up 66% in the last five years. Hill says he sold a 1,600 square foot home “in 2019 for $185,000 and then in 2020 to 2021 – after Covid hit – the prices jumped to $230,000 and now, that home is pretty much worth $250,000.” “You really get more bang for your buck.”

Kids stop by Pleasant Grove Park after school

For many local kids, Pleasant Grove Park is a regular afternoon stop on the way home from school. Just a half mile from the elementary campus, the park’s old-fashioned playground equipment is spread out across several acres of rolling green hills. Parents catch up with neighbors on the central walking trail, while kids spin around the merry-go-round and make friends on the see-saws. On sweltering summer days, little ones can dip their toes in the park’s clear streams or head across the street to the public library.

A handful of shops scatered across Pleasant Grove

A handful of local shops and restaurants are hidden in small retail strips across Pleasant Grove. At the center of town, Hills Foodland is the area's only full-service grocery store that’s been serving the community for over 50 years. Hungry shoppers can walk a few doors down to order a homemade lamb gyro from Olipita Mediterranean & American Grill. A couple of fast-food chains, the local CVS and a gas station surround the quiet intersection of Park and Pleasant Grove Roads. Residents can follow Park Road just a bit further east to find discount essentials at the Dollar General.

Pleasant Grove has 'one-way-in and one-way-out'

Pleasant Grove sits immediately west of U.S. Steel’s Fairfield plant and just a few miles north of Hueytown. Hill says, “It’s a one-way-in, one-way-out kinda place.” Park Road is the main thoroughfare linking the city to Interstate 20, which brings commuters 10 miles east into Downtown Birmingham. Back home, Hill adds, “Some streets have the same or similar names, so if you’re driving through here at night and you’re not familiar with the area, you can get lost – it can get really confusing in the dark with all the trees.”
