About Pleasanton, TX

The city of live oaks and friendly folks

Colloquially known as the Birthplace of the Cowboy, Pleasanton is a small city steeped in Southwest culture. This community—also known for its motto, “The City of Live Oaks and Friendly Folks”—is just 35 miles south of San Antonio. “We’re definitely a small, growing town. It’s nice that we’re outside of San Antonio, so we have that easy access,” says Andres Aguirre, the city secretary for Pleasanton. Pleasanton is home to just over 11,000 residents, a number that has grown consistently over recent years. The city is known for its southwest culture, including festivals, museums and a large cowboy statue in front of City Hall. Residents here also enjoy thriving city parks, a supportive business community and the peace and quiet of living near the Texas countryside.

Celebrating Southwest culture in the Birthplace of the Cowboy

As the Birthplace of the Cowboy, Pleasanton hosts several cowboy-themed events each year. Cowboy Heritage Days is a two-day festival with live music, craft and food vendors, a petting zoo and a rodeo. Cowboy Homecoming is an annual event held by the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce that includes a parade, a concert and a cowboy breakfast. Residents can learn about the area’s history and cowboy culture year-round at the Longhorn Museum, home to several artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Pleasanton and Atascosa County. The city also hosts other events, like a Cinco de Mayo celebration and Wings and Wheels, a car and plane show at the municipal airport.

Upgraded parks offer plenty of recreational opportunities

Pleasanton River Park is the main feature of the city’s parks department and has undergone some significant improvements recently. “The park is one of our biggest things here. We just finished doing an amphitheater and expanded the skate park. We also just finished a walking trail in our park that goes into the pecan orchard. So we’re working on expanding our walking and biking trails for residents,” Aguirre says. In addition to the features he mentioned, the park has a playground, splash pad, picnic pavilions and exercise equipment. Residents can also use the park for sports like basketball, soccer, baseball and volleyball. During the warmer months, residents can cool off at the City Aquatic Center on the west side of town. This facility has a swimming pool and splash pad and offers swimming lessons, water aerobics and private parties.
