Industrial area bordered by bays, train tracks and the 580 Freeway
Unincorporated North Richmond rests between San Francisco Bay and the city of San Pablo. Part of the Point Richmond District, this industrial area’s shipyards attracted workers during WWII, and some employees for local petroleum, railway and shipping companies are still here. In fact, a Chevron oil refinery is the area’s largest employer. Even though this company brings jobs to the neighborhood, it also brings environmental concerns. In 2021, a pipe broke, causing 800 gallons of diesel to leak into the bay, and this is just one of a long line of incidents for North Richmond. Fortunately, these events have tied the community together to fight pollution and create safer spaces for children. This diverse area is a portrait of resilience, with organizations like Cooperation Richmond, The Watershed Project and RichmondLAND working to reduce pollution, improve air quality and create affordable housing.

Nearby shopping centers, restaurants and a sailing goat
Located at the Point San Pablo Harbor, Sailing Goat Restaurant is one of North Richmond’s only restaurants. The local landmark has a large patio for outdoor dining with bay views, and its seafood is often bought from fresh catches in the harbor. Immediately south of the neighborhood, Point Richmond has a variety of eateries. Up & Under Pub and Grill’s brick red exterior is easy to see at the corner of West Richmond Avenue. The tavern specializes in elevated pub grub like lamb burgers and brisket smoked in-house. Raymond’s Pizzeria is a neighborhood hangout with inventive pies named to showcase the place’s sense of humor. In nearby San Pablo, Food Barn, Farmer’s Market and Mi Ranchito Market are just three local grocers. Pinole Vista Crossing and Pinole Vista Shopping Center, both with big box stores and restaurants, are 5 miles away on Fitzgerald Drive.

North Richmond Ball Field is for more than just baseball. The eight-acre park also serves as a soccer field and nature area, with Wildcat Creek Trail running along its southern boundary. Shields-Reid Park and Community Center occupy six acres near the eastern border of North Richmond. The park offers a baseball field, playgrounds and two basketball courts. The community center is home to a food bank, fitness center and children’s summer camps. The 6-mile Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Trail connects to the 500-mile San Francisco Bay Trail. The ten-foot-wide pathway provides incredible views of the San Francisco Bay and a safe way for cyclists and hikers to cross the bridge to Vista Point. Plus, on the west side, there's Point Molate Beach Park for more hikes and relaxation on the Bay.

A WWII neighborhood with a variety of housing options
North Richmond is mainly industrial, with a residential pocket from Wildcat Creek to Vernon Avenue. The small area is filled with housing from a variety of decades in an assortment of styles. Classic bungalows, new Craftsman-styles and Spanish-inspired homes with stucco walls often have small lawns landscaped with rocks or flowers inside iron or chain-link fences. The community is more affordable than other Bay Area neighborhoods, partially because of pollution issues. There are also subsidized apartments and lots for custom-built homes are still available. “A lot of homes in North Richmond are being remodeled because the city is trying to clean up the neighborhood,” says Steven Lenz Jr., a Realtor with Compass with nearly a decade of experience. Homes sell for a median price of $525,000 after around 30 days. Prices range from $275,000 to $450,000 for a small unrenovated home. New construction, or homes with more bedrooms can range from $470,000 to $925,000.

Freeways, buses and the Richmond Parkway
North Richmond is primarily bordered by the Richmond Parkway, freight train tracks and San Francisco Bay. This can make the area feel isolated from San Pablo and Point Richmond. However, roadways like Castro Street, Parr Boulevard and Market Avenue connect the industrial neighborhood to nearby cities. The Richmond Parkway connects to the 580 Freeway and Interstate 80. Sidewalks are only found in the residential portion, and limited AC Transit bus lines connect to the Richmond BART & Amtrak station 3 miles away. Multiple trains passing and heavily traveled streets can make the area noisy at odd times. Essential services are close by, with the San Pablo Police Department and the Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center 2 miles away. The community is less than 18 miles from Highland Hospital in Oakland or Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez. It’s also 21 miles from San Francisco and 22 miles from Oakland International Airport.
