As attractive at Tradition, without all the HOAs

The neighborhood of Tornio, surprisingly, gets compared to nearby Tradition, though the two communities are pretty different. “Both neighborhoods are beautiful, but Torino is one of the nicest neighborhoods in the area with scattered lots,” says Jason Coley, a team lead with Atlantic Shores Realty who sells throughout the Treasure Coast. Those scattered lots often contain spacious homes, in non-gated, HOA-free subdivisions; amenities that can be hard to come by in Central Florida. Like its neighbor to the north of the city, Tornio is popular among Port St. Lucie locals, but for different reasons. Residents in Tornio have more access to nature, have more room to spread out and get to save a little money while doing it.

Ranch-style and contemporary homes on scattered lots

Torino's streets are lined with ranch and contemporary-style houses built in the 1990s and 2000s. The ranch-style homes typically feature three bedrooms and are priced from the low $300,000s to the low $400,000s. The contemporary builds often feature four and five bedrooms and are priced between the low $400,000s and the high $700,000s. They sit on roomy lots, neatly landscaped with small trees, shrubs and other local plants and feature substantial driveways leading to two-car garages. While most residences are single-family homes, three-bedroom townhouses are available in Vizcaya Falls, a community in the neighborhood's center. Prices average about $300,000 for 1,500 square feet. Those looking to build a custom home in the neighborhood can find many open lots averaging $120,000 for a quarter-acre. Regarding crime, Torino scores a 3 out of 10 on the CAP Index, one point lower than the national average.

Fort Pierce Central High School gives kids many career pathways to study

Older students often attend Fort Pierce Central High, which has a B rating on Niche and serves just over 3,000 students. The school offers three career-focused learning academies: an aeronautical academy, a culinary academy and a medical academy. Before they get to high school, many kids begin at West Gate K-8 School, which also has a B rating on Niche. Families interested in private education for their kids can choose from several faith-based and Montessori schools that serve the area.

Winterlakes Park offers many amenities

Winterlakes Park is a busy outdoor recreation hub on weekends, especially on the playground, where kids stay out of the sun while they play, thanks to the large green shades covering the equipment. Tennis courts are available for tennis and pickleball, and the covered picnic pavilion is a popular destination for celebrations. Baseball diamonds, basketball courts and soccer fields are also available. The park is dog-friendly, with separate fenced-in areas for large and small dogs. The Champion Turf Club at St. James is next door in St. Lucie North and is a public course that draws golfers to its undulating terrain and challenging greens.

Nearby Clover Field is a big draw for baseball fans

Clover Field, in nearby St. Lucie West, is a big draw to the neighborhood. The 7,100-seat stadium is home to the St. Lucie Mets, a single-A club that plays there from April through September. It is also the spring training home of the New York Mets. Torino residents can drive through the neighborhood and be there in minutes without getting on Interstate 95. Traffic can sometimes be an issue, especially during prime training season, but recent infrastructure changes have helped alleviate it. "They widened the bridge, which helps with traffic. And they'll have police officers at stop lights to help with traffic, too," Coley says.

Town Center at St. Lucie West offers shopping and dining

The Town Center at St. Lucie West is great for running weekend errands. The shopping center offers Sprouts for groceries, Walmart for essentials and specialty stores like Staples, Total Wine & More and Crumbl. Town Center also offers restaurants to suit any mood, from familiar favorites like Texas Roadhouse and Chick-fil-A to locally-owned spots like Spice Thai Cuisine and The Vine & Barley, an eclectic bar with self-serve wine machines and rotating craft beer selections.

Residents get around on Florida's Turnpike and I-95

Florida’s Turnpike lines the neighborhood's east side, and Interstate 95 lines the west side, giving residents easy access to the rest of the Treasure Coast.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
