A forested escape in northwest Portland
It’s hard to imagine an urban neighborhood that is much more outdoorsy than Linnton. Linnton residents can enjoy tons of fresh air while being part of Portland. At the foot of one of the largest urban parks in North America, Linnton is a hiker’s and mountain biker’s dream. Nestled between the Willamette River and Portland’s enormous Forest Park, Linnton residents are never more than a couple of blocks from some of the most popular trails and best views in the greater Portland area. “I think a lot of people that purchase in the Linnton area do so primarily it’s bedroom community that’s a quick commute from most places,” says Jon Klote, a Realtor with Stellar Realty Northwest, who has sold homes in the area more than 11 years. “If you work at IBM and Nike, you don’t get bogged down as much traffic from here.” Easy travel against a scenic natural background is Linnton’s winning combination. On the flip side, while nature is the community’s backdrop, a glance in the opposite direction reveals much less scenic industrial areas between there and the Willamette River.
Majestic Forest Park
Linnton’s most prominent and perhaps most desirable feature is its access to acres of lush nature in the form of its parks. “In Linnton, you’re in an urban environment and two feet from nature. You’re instantly in the wilderness hiking, mountain biking, immersed in nature,” Klote says. Linnton’s two parks are Linnton Park and Forest Park, which commands the most attention. A habit for wildlife as much as for human recreation, Forest Park’s massive 5,200 acres provide a critical refuge for native wildlife and plant species. It also has a greater value, acting as an essential air and water filter. The park offers a 30-mile trail network for foot traffic, dogs, and horseback riding in select areas.

Homes of all shapes and sizes
While Linnton benefits from and blends into the vast ribbon of nature that unfurls behind it, it also shares significant portions of space with industry. The mix here is evenly split between residential and industrial properties, making for a peculiar blend of two seemingly opposite character types. “Linnton has the feel of a coastal, light industrial area that has changed to smaller businesses and living,” Klote says. While commercial industry spaces align along the Willamette River, 180 degrees in the opposite direction, a drive along neighborhood streets might encounter gardens bursting with everything from fruit and vegetables to native wildflowers. Here’s where Linnton’s unique brand of housing becomes intensely localized and incredibly varied, with everything from new townhouses to historic cottages and midcentury ranch-style homes to iconic modernist mansions, many with incredible river views. This explains the vast range of home prices here, from as low as $300,000 to as much as $800,000 and sometimes beyond. The median price for a single-family home is $475,000.

Community engagement at the center
Events and activities here revolve heavily around community engagement, the idea that community members are responsible to one another and seeing after their neighbors and nature. In that way, the Linnton Community Center has become a hub of events and activities, offering everything from preschool to after-school programming for school-age kids to a popular summer camp. Meanwhile, Forest Park Conservancy works actively with volunteers to care for the park. Each month, they gather in the park to rake leaves and clean and protect Forest Park.
A bridge to shopping
Shopping for Linnton residents requires some effort. Supermarkets aren’t particularly far. But residents must travel about 5 minutes across the iconic St. John’s Bridge to find a variety of major supermarkets like Safeway and Fred Meyer. Or, they can make a slightly longer trek downtown and enjoy everything the city offers — it’s only 15 minutes away. When Linnton locals just want a quiet drink, they can head to cozy and unassuming Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar. Looking for a family restaurant? There’s Decoy, whose old-school Chinese and American grub always hits the spot.

Quick commutes from here to there
Situated along U.S. Route 30, Linnton is just a trip across the St. John’s Bridge into St. John’s and beyond to Vancouver. Highway 30 takes travelers to Interstate 405, which connects to I-5. “During rush hour, there may be a little backup, but it’s only usually a couple of minutes,” Klote says.
