Quiet and safe residential haven southwest of Downtown Portland

Located 6 miles southwest of downtown Portland sits Markham, a neighborhood that gives residents all the benefits of living close to downtown without the hustle and bustle. Homes in Markham are more spread out than surrounding neighborhoods, while green space for recreational activity is nearby. Residents here also enjoy an impressive pipeline of public schools. While the neighborhood has a lot to offer, it’s also a quiet and safe residential haven. “Markham is a quiet neighborhood where people love to take in nature,” Angela Stevens, a licensed principal broker with Hatch Homes Group says. “It’s a walker-friendly neighborhood. There’s always people walking on the streets.”

From small ranch-style homes to new traditionals

This almost exclusively residential neighborhood features nearly every type of house popular in the latter half of the 20th century. This includes the ever-present ranch-style home with an attached two-car garage, bi-levels with a staircase that greets you at the front door, Craftsman bungalows with large eaves and decorative brackets and new traditional homes that feature cedar shake accents. Markham also boasts colorful townhouses with balconies and garages. Most homes in the neighborhood sit on tree-lined streets with a sporadic layout of sidewalks on both sides of the street in some parts of the neighborhood, only one side of the street in others, and in some cases, not at all. Off-street parking is kept to a minimum because the few houses that don’t have garages have large driveways. And neighbors are casually separated by privacy fences, stone walls, or planted bushes and trees. Two-bedroom homes in Markham go for between $330,000 to $600,000, while four-bedroom and larger homes start at about $450,000 and sometimes fetch $1 million or more. “People tend to stay in their homes for a long time,” Stephen FitzMaurice, eXp Realty’s principal real estate broker in Oregon says. This low turnaround rate means that many of the neighborhood’s older homes could use some upgrades, particularly when it comes to boosting their energy efficiency before they go to market. FitzMaurice says this creates a good flipping opportunity for some homes.

Standout schools to cheer for

Neighborhood children start at Stephenson Elementary, which earned an A-minus grade from Niche and a perfect 10 out of 10 from GreatSchools. From there, students move on to Jackson Middle School, which earned a B-plus grade overall from Niche but was given an A grade in academics. In 9th grade, students transition over to Ida B. Wells High School, which earned a B grade from Niche. Ida B. Wells High School has an impressive cheer team that has won the Oregon State Championship five times and were USA Nationals finalists.

No shortage of trails nearby

The 400-foot-wide canyon at Marshall Park Natural Area is just 1 mile east of Markham. Along with the canyon, Marshall Park is home to a 3.1-mile hiking trail that gains 585 feet of elevation and is open for all seasons. Also east of the neighborhood is the 658-acre Tryon Creek State Natural Area, an Oregon State Park. The park features 8 miles worth of hiking trails, 3-plus miles of pack gravel trails for equestrians, and a 3-mile paved bicycle path. Just north of that is River View Natural Area, which includes a 2-mile trail that gains 430 feet of elevation. For those not looking to hike in the wilderness, Spring Garden Park, 2 miles northwest of Markham is the perfect place to take children. The park has a playground with an interactive water feature.

From Mediterranean food to shopping outdoors

On the northwest border of the neighborhood sits Pacific Highway, home to a plethora of shopping and dining options. Along that stretch sits Grab A Gyro, where residents can enjoy Mediterranean-style food. Just a mile further is Yalla, a smokehouse that is popular for residents looking for a variety of smoked meats. For those who want to mix shopping and exercise, Hillsdale Center, an outdoor shopping mall 2 miles from Markham, features stores like Apple, West Elm and Ethan Allen. Visitors can even catch a movie at the Cinepolis, the luxury cinemas that are a part of the mall. For grocery shopping, residents can make the 1-mile drive north to Safeway.

TriMet bus routes from Barbur Transit Center

Just 1 mile north of the neighborhood, residents can use TriMet’s Barbur Transit Center and its two bus routes to get around. The bus offers service to Portland’s City Center. Those looking to make the commute to Downtown Portland via their own personal car are looking at a 6-mile drive. Residents looking to go on their next vacation are looking at a 16-mile drive to Portland International Airport. For medical attention, OHSU Hospital is a 5-mile drive from Markham.

Portland Country Dance Community

Portland Country Dance Community is a popular organization to join for residents, especially ones into country music and dancing. It holds English country dances at Markham’s Burlingame Water Tower Dance Hall every Friday night, a popular event for many neighborhood residents.
