Curving along Oregon’s longest Route 84, Russell offers quick freeway access, significant green space, nearby golfing and a community plaza. Yet even with traditional amenities and downtown proximity, it’s still somewhat of an unsung treasure. Says Andy Johnson, local resident and Realtor with John L. Scott Real Estate, “I know people use the expression a lot, but Russell really is a hidden gem, because you sort of don't know it exists until you drive in and see it. People think it’s far from downtown, but we’re so easily accessible via Highway 84 and a number of east-west streets, that you can be downtown in 15 minutes. And because it’s almost entirely residential, you never feel like you’re in a thoroughfare. People you see walking and biking actually live here, they’re not just passing through.”
Peaceful streets in Russell are lined with sidewalks, and tended yards are often shaded by evergreens. Homes backing to parkland enjoy a backdrop of majestic forest, and children can walk to neighborhood schools. To make room for cyclists, central roadways are painted with “sharrows.” Johnson adds, “It’s a sleepy suburban community with single-family, Brady-Bunch-inspired homes. The lots are a bit bigger, and the homes have original character. It’s really the quintessential ranch and split-level community from the ‘60s and ‘70s.”
Options suit various budgets, from a three-bedroom brick ranch-style fixer-upper built in the 1950s for around $300,000, to a 1960s four-bedroom brick and siding single-level near the park for $650,000. In between, you’ll see beautifully updated 1950s three-bedroom cottages and renovated 1970s split-levels averaging around $500,000. “A lot of new people are coming in, while some homeowners have decades of tenure. You’ll notice residents are committed to maintaining their homes, but it doesn’t feel stuck-up or pretentious. It’s wide and flat with big sky and mature trees, and just feels very welcoming.”
Parkrose School District earns an overall B from Niche, and kids can start their public-school education at Russell Elementary, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. They then move on to Parkrose Middle which Niche gives a B-minus grade. Teens head to Parkrose High which earns a B Niche grade. In 2023, students from Parkrose won the top five awards in the Verselandia! grand-slam poetry celebration at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Portland Christian Junior/Senior High School offers a faith-based alternative and earns an A-minus grade from Niche. Johnson adds, “The Wheatley School in Russell is a great resource for students with special needs across different school districts.” Wheatley serves students ages 5-21 who experience educational challenges and medical complexities.
A central jewel, John Luby City Park brims with dense woodland. Recently, neighbors planted a demonstration garden here, with understory plants that support native pollinators. Johnson, who lives in Russell and is part of the neighborhood association, says, “We’re all passionate about John Luby Park. It's this super-cool place, gifted to the city by a private resident long ago, that’s just packed with mature fir trees. You’re on a dog walk, and suddenly you’re deep in the forest. And it’s so quiet in there.” Golfers tee off at the nearby public Glendoveer Golf and Tennis facility, equipped with two 18-hole courses, indoor tennis courts and seasonal footgolf. You’ll also find a 2-mile fitness trail that’s popular with birders and runners.
And while you won’t find a buzzing commercial corridor in Russell, you have a nice selection of go-tos in one convenient San Rafael Shopping Center. Savor craft beverages inside the regionally famous Black Rock Coffee Bar or dine on comfort food favorites at Shari’s Café and Pies. Founded in 1978, Shari’s is the largest family-style chain in the region serving gold-medal award-winning pies. Akira Sushi is the place for sushi, noodles and teriyaki entrees; and for dining at home, bring your grocery list to WinCo Foods.
Adds Johnson, “It’s also a commuter’s dream because you’re not far from the MAX Light Rail. There’s a Park ‘n Ride at Gateway Transit Center that you can take downtown or to the airport.” Conveniently located Russell provides a charming suburban haven less than 10 miles east of downtown.
