Boutique vibes in south Portland
Quiet and kempt, South Burlingame is close to Portland’s downtown but feels much further away. Just an arm’s length from the lively Willamette River, the neighborhood is moored to the city while preserving a suburban look and feel. “It feels quiet and private. There are changes in elevation, so you’re getting some hills, you’re getting some trees,” says Scott Wilson, a Realtor with RE/MAX Equity Group, who’s worked here and throughout Portland since 1996. “It’s a very nice, kind of boutique neighborhood with easy access if you work downtown, in Lake Oswego or Beaverton, where Nike is located.” The neighborhood is popular with Oregon Health and Science University workers just up the road.
South Burlingame's game, many styles
South Burlingame’s homes line well-wooded blocks with sidewalks, copious trees and tall hedges. Along the winding and hilly streets sit an eclectic array of homes spanning a stretch from the 1920s through the 1960s predominantly. Someone may encounter bungalows, Arts and Crafts, English Tudor Revivals and ranch-style homes on any given block. Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, and midcentury homes are in the mix, too. “The midcentury homes would overperform as far as styles and demand a premium because of the open floor plan and clean lines,” Wilson says. The median price for a single-family home is around $615,000, with homes ranging from about $450,000 on the lower end to $900,000 at the top of the spectrum.

Say hey, Chez José
Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard has food stops when residents are ready for a meal. A couple of the options along that thoroughfare include Chez José and Moonlight Grill, which face one another on opposite sides of the road. Chez José is a fixture that’s been open for over three decades, serving authentic Mexican cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients. Moonlight Grill offers a menu packed with authentic Mediterranean fare — some consider it the best Mediterranean food in the city. Or consider The Original Pancake House, which, after all, started right here in Portland. A full belly fuels folks to get their shopping in. Multiple grocery stores, including Safeway, Fred Meyer and Zupan’s Markets, are in close reach.

Burlingame's got game
Burlingame Park weaves its way into the neighborhood’s westernmost landscape in a surprisingly quiet part of the neighborhood, given the freeway just behind the trees. At roughly 5 acres, the park offers just enough space to stretch, breathe, relax and play. The park has a playground, athletic field space and a walking path and is a peaceful haven for a delightful afternoon. When the weather makes outdoor play difficult, Trampoline Town is an indoor alternative. The trampoline and aerial arts facility offers both adult and youth classes.

Close to I-5
South Burlingame’s northern edge rests against Interstate 5, making easy highway access for commutes north to downtown Portland, about 5 miles away. Although traffic is usually manageable, roads can back up slightly during rush hours. Fortunately, the neighborhood has “many surface streets here and a number of ways in and out to avoid traffic,” Wilson says.

It is a safe neighborhood, with schools in walking distance. I grew up here, walking to school and playing on the playgrounds or at the park on the weekend.
