A well-kept golf course community
In a neighborhood with a meticulously maintained golf course and street names like Inverness Drive and St. Andrews Place, homeowners could easily think they’ve been transported to Scotland. But this golf community is located in the heart of North Idaho. “You can find similar homes in other developments, but what you’re not going to find in North Idaho that you will find in The Highlands is a wonderfully designed, well-maintained golf course community with very mature landscaping," says Wayne Peterson, the principal and designated broker with Idaho Luxe, who has sold homes in the neighborhood. "The thing that’s really interesting about this neighborhood is that it doesn’t feel dated at all. Homes have been built over the last 20 years — and new, custom homes are still being built in the Highlands. So you see beautifully mature landscape and newer homes together.” The Highlands offers homeowners a high-end lifestyle just north of Interstate 90 in the suburban city of Post Falls.

Teeing off in The Highlands
The Highlands Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course known for its well-manicured fairways and greens. Towering pine trees are set around the facility, adding to the northwest landscape. It is also known for its full-size driving range and practice area, where players can work on their putting and short game. The Highlands is public, offering daily rates or season passes for those who plan to play more frequently. Golf simulators are also available for days when the weather doesn’t allow for an outdoor game. For more outdoor activities nearby, Ross Point Recreation Area is just 3 miles from the neighborhood on the banks of the Spokane River. This day-use site has picnic tables, a designated swim area and a floating dock for watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards.

Spacious homes in a North Idaho community
Ranch-style and two-story new traditional homes are common in The Highlands, often with various materials or exterior styles that allow buyers to find something that fits them. “It’s really a mix because they’re all custom homes. There’s stucco in there. There’s brick, board and batten, newer homes and modern styles,” says Joel Greiner, a Realtor with Windermere Coeur d’Alene Realty who has sold in the neighborhood. Many houses were built in the community between the 1990s and 2000s, but properties have continued to be developed since then. Peterson says the final few lots were built out in the early 2020s. Most houses have views of the golf course fairways or greens and sit on spacious suburban lots between a quarter acre and half acre. The landscaping of the golf course carries over to the homes, with many residents maintaining shrubs and mature trees on their properties. Houses that don’t sit on the fairways typically cost between $500,000 and $750,000, while homes on the course can cost between $900,000 and $1.3 million.
