A small city on the banks of the Schuylkill River
Pottstown West End sits on the Schuylkill River in southeastern Pennsylvania, part of a city valued as a respite from the chaos of larger metropolitan areas like Philadelphia. Split half-and-half between a southern residential sector and a northern section primarily occupied by a local airport, shopping centers and other business locations, the neighborhood is in the midst of renewal. “A lot of younger first-time homebuyers are moving out that way,” says Janet McCready, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach. “They’re doing some revitalization in Pottstown.”
To the east, across a tendril of the Schuylkill that cuts through Pottstown itself, downtown's High Street is the primary hub for shopping and dining. Midcentury homes are the most common structure found in terms of housing, and they’re removed from the downtown area but close enough to be convenient for residents. "It's a nice area because it's close to a lot of things, as far as getting on the highway to go to the Philly area," says Tyler Miller, a Realtor with Keller Williams Platinum Realty. "Prices are a lot more affordable than some of the surrounding areas. It's a small-town vibe." When a bigger city is needed, Routes 100 and 422 interweave at a massive cloverleaf interchange on the south banks of the river, linking West End Pottstown residents with Philadelphia, Allentown and beyond.

Retail and restaurants at Pottstown Center; High Street dining district
Pottstown Center, a small complex close to Pottstown West End’s residential area, is the main shopping destination within the neighborhood, containing a Walmart and several restaurants, including Mexican eatery Los Aztecas and Hi Pot, which serves Asian barbecue and hot pot. The WQ Diner sits on King Street and is open from early morning to late at night every day of the week, and Sly Fox Brewing Co. has been in the neighborhood’s northern half since 1995.
High Street is one of the city’s most populated spots for local restaurants, but residents have to head east across a branch of the Schuylkill River to find them. The Pottstown Farm & Artisan Regional Market, or FARM, is in the same area, open from May to October. “Most people go to High Street,” McCready says. “There are restaurants there and some places where you can listen to live music and sit outside. There isn’t much shopping, but you also have Route 100, which could take you to Allentown.” The Upland Square shopping center sits about 2 miles north up Route 100 from Pottstown West End’s residential section, with Target, a Giant supermarket, Dick’s Sporting Goods, a movie theater and more at the center. Downtown Pottstown is less than 2 miles east.

Several large green spaces near the Schuylkill
Given Pottstown West End’s location along the Schuylkill River, recreation is a large part of the area’s appeal. The Schuylkill River Trail accommodates foot and bicycle traffic along a stretch of about 30 miles. Plans call for it to span over 100 miles in the future, once completed. Memorial Park partially lies within Pottstown West End, sprawling across nearly 50 acres. Residents can find facilities there for sports like baseball and softball, as well as a dog park, BMX ramps and areas to fish. Anyone headed to the river can put canoes or kayaks into the Schuylkill from Riverfront Park.

Small, well-maintained Cape Cods
Most of the homes in Pottstown West End are small, single-family Cape Cod properties. The area marks a midpoint between the prominent townhouses of the downtown area and larger, more expensive homes as the city branches farther out. “The homes are a bit older, but pretty much well-maintained,” McCready says. “There’s smaller detached homes, which helps."
Some investment properties dot the area, but within Pottstown West End itself, small Cape Cods typically range from $250,000 to $350,000. “The affordability in Pottstown is more so than other stops along Route 100,” says Christy Bennett, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. Most date to around 1950 and sit in the southern half of the neighborhood.

King of Prussia and Hershey represent the two ends of that segment, and 422 makes up a portion of the trip to Philadelphia, about 40 miles southeast.
“You can get around there pretty fast,” says McCready, who used to live in the area. “You can walk, there’s public transportation and a lot of walking to High Street, which is good. Everything is very convenient.” The public-use Pottstown Municipal Airport sits in the northern half of the neighborhood.
