Relaxed and waterfront living by Lake Wynonah
Lake Wynonah is a gated, private community in Schuylkill County centered around two deep-water lakes—Lake Wynonah and Fawn Lake—that are combined 200 acres. “The theme here at Lake Wynonah is life on vacation,” says Liz Reifinger, who is the community manager at Lake Wynonah Property Owners Association. “It’s also a boating community, and everywhere you go, it’s so quiet and peaceful, and you can see nature and wildlife in your backyard.” With about 1,300 custom-built homes spread across nearly 1,500 acres of green hills, various recreational amenities such as pools, boat docks, playgrounds and sports facilities, as well as a professional full-time operational staff that takes meticulous care of the community, Lake Wynonah offers residents an elevated, active lifestyle centered around peace and privacy.
Lakefront homes in a private, gated community outside of Schuylkill Haven
Developed from the 1970s to the present, homes in Lake Wynonah are custom-built with a mix of styles that are completely up to the homeowners’ liking. “We are a POA with about 2,700 parcels of land, and homeowners are required to join our membership,” Reifinger says. Single-family properties between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet list from just under $200,000 to $400,000. Lakefront residences with private piers or boat ramps start at $600,000 and can go over $1 million. Houses with water views also tend to be bigger, and these can go over 5,000 square feet. Housing styles run the gamut from a mix of ranch styles, including raised ranches and split-levels, to new traditional and Cape Cods. Lot sizes can be between quarter-acre to 1 acre, with most homes having about half-acre lots. Some properties may be in flood zones, and homeowners may be required to purchase flood insurance.
Water activities at Fawn Lake and Lake Wynonah
Most people center their recreational activities around the lakes. Covering about 175 acres, Lake Wynonah has a marina and many docks throughout, and water sports such as power boating, tubing and waterskiing are hugely popular. Fawn Lake is for non-motorized water recreation such as fishing, kayaking and swimming. Additional outdoor places to walk and explore include Sarsi Cove and Tomahawk Park. The association also has a large swimming pool and a smaller wading pool for children. Playgrounds, picnic areas and sports facilities such as basketball, tennis and pickleball courts are also located within the community grounds.
Socials and private parties at The Lodge
Community members are often spotted socializing at The Lodge, the association’s lounge, restaurant and gathering place. The eatery serves dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and it has a bar area, a stone fireplace and a jukebox. Located at the western edge of the community, Sunny Cupboard is a bakery and a deli that has breakfast sandwiches and regular subs. Summit View Restaurant, slightly south of the community, offers views of the lush forests and classic American fare. For groceries, people can either go to Bill’s Produce in Schuylkill Haven or to the year-round Rennigers farmers market on Saturdays, both of which are within 10 miles of the community. Farther up north, the Fairlane Village Mall in Pottsville has big-box and department stores such as Lowe’s and Kohl’s, and Walmart is 15 miles up north in St. Clair.
Public schools in Blue Mountain and Schuylkill Haven districts
The area is zoned for two public school systems, the Blue Mountain School District and the Schuylkill Haven Area School District. Students zoned for Schuylkill Haven may attend the B-rated Schuylkill Haven Area Elementary Center, Schuylkill Haven Area Middle School and Schuylkill Haven Area High School, both of which have a C-plus rating.
Lake Wynonah's Patriotic Boat Parade for Independence Day
On Independence Day, the community celebrates the occasion with the Patriotic Boat Parade, and members decorate their boats in red, blue and white and cruise around the lake. The association has many recreational groups, such as reading, Bible study and a camera club. Sports clubs, such as the Fish and Boat Club, host adult and youth fishing tournaments, and the community also has events such as an egg hunt and trick-or-treat activities. Festivals within the county include the Schuylkill County Fair and the Schuylkill Winterfest.
