The historic Waterfront in Poughkeepsie, New York is a great place to view the Hudson River in a huge and placid setting. You can occasionally see barges lumbering on the river, as well as fireworks on summer evenings. There's also entertainment for children, yummy food choices, and great options for drinks with friends. The Waterfront is just 30 minutes east of New Paltz, and you can visit easily from New York City in less than two hours. The Poughkeepsie train station is a beautiful historic building worth walking through even if you come by car.

Kids particularly love the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum, which is known for its hands-on activities, a crawling gym for toddlers, exploration tunnels, and more.

Two nearby restaurants offer great river views: Mid-Hudson Bridge and Walkway Over the Hudson. There's also the River Station, which has a kids menu, frozen drinks, and American surf and turf. The Ice House, located in a historic building, offers fancier options, along with wine, beer, and soda. If you want more Italian fare, you have to try the family-run Rossi’s for home-cooked goodness, including homemade focaccia, lasagna, stuffed clams, meatballs, and so much more. You can even get dessert to go. Outdoor seating is limited, but you can take your meal on a picnic and enjoy the spectacular views. You can also stop at Aurora’s bakery for some specialty Italian desserts.

The Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market is a seasonal farmers market that offers food grown locally in the Hudson Valley. It operates weekly on Mondays 3:00-6:30 pm, from May to October.

Many residents choose to hold weddings, graduations, and similar celebrations at the beautiful Grandview, which boasts an amazing vantage on the Hudson, especially spectacular lighting after sundown. There's a hotel next door where guests can relax.

The Poughkeepsie Waterfront is one part of the Hudson Valley you must visit. Bring family, friends, an appetite, and your camera for the spectacular views.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
