Long before Prospect Park became a Philadelphia suburb, it was one of those communities that sprang up along miles and miles of brand-new railroad track. The rail companies built homes to support their construction efforts and keep their workers nearby. Before long, you’d see a town take root and a Prospect Park being born. “They started building the houses for the people who were building the tracks. One got built, and the next got built, and eventually they’d need a police force and other city services and before you knew it, you had a town,” says Dave Coffey, a Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line, who grew up not far from here. He calls today’s Prospect Park family-oriented, with lots of shopping, storefronts and places for parents and kids.
Once you get off the main drags like Lincoln Avenue, Prospect Park becomes a noticeably quiet place to call home. With not much new construction to speak of, the homes here, many of them Victorians, are tributes to days long since passed with distinct personalities all their own. But attract and spacious as many of the homes may be, it’s often the school district the Coffey’s clients tell him they care most about. “I think it’s the school district that would say drives people there,” Coffey says. “Prospect’s the next step up to get your kids into a better situation.”
Making that next step these days carries a median price tag around $275,000. Coffey says the average single-family home here floats in the range of $235,000 to $325,000. Twin-family homes, also called side-by-sides, cost less. But even some of them may run as high as $235,000, in which case Coffey suggests homebuyers may find a single-family home a better value.
Prospect Park students attend school in the Interboro School District, which Niche has given a B rating. Students attend Prospect Park School from kindergarten through middle school. Some attend Ridley Middle School and Ridley High School or Interboro High School.
In their free time, kids are encouraged to participate in neighborhood athletic associations, which compete with other local athletic associations in neighboring towns. There’s plenty of space for children and adults to play. And by the way, if you’re wondering whether there’s a park in Prospect Park, there is. It’s called Prospect Park Square. Or, for variety, you can head on over to Bonnes Park in neighboring Ridley Park.
When it's time for entertainment, Philadelphia is about 16 miles away and not more than a half hour’s drive. Chances are, though, you’ll opt for the SEPTA commuter line. Particularly if you work, a monthly train pass is one way to fight those monthly parking costs, which tend to add up. “It’s 20 bucks a day to park your car. If you work five days a week, that’s 400 bucks a month. So, it pays to pay the $45 pass,” Coffey says.
Once you work your way back to town, you’ll likely want to grab a bite at one of the local eateries. Right near the train station, you’ll see Marty Magee’s. The restaurant and bar is a favorite around here, as much for its pool league as for what’s on the menu. The food matters for sure., But in Prospect Park, getting along with your neighbors matters just as much.
