Rural town where everyone waves
Beulah Valley’s quiet and nature-surrounded environment is one of its draws, whether it's the sound of leaves cracking or the daily sightings of wildlife. The rural area embraces its small-town feel through its frequent events or neighborly gestures. “Everyone waves at everybody. We have a joke about the different styles of waving,” says Caren Ermel, owner/broker at Southern Colorado Mountain Real Estate, a lifetime resident and five-year real estate agent. “There are ones that use their pointer finger to wave and those that wave really big. You see a car. You see a person, you wave.” According to Ermel, the area has around 1,200 residents at any given time, many of whom are generational family members.
The residents of Beulah Valley have a special community bond of support for each other.

Early 20th century homes and modern spots
Beulah Valley is an area with lots of one-offs, where the same home doesn’t appear twice. “If you want this area, you can find something quick,” Ermel says. “If you’re looking for something specific like closer to the Valley, some acres, a hobby farm, or 35 acres, they exist here, but you’re not going to find that quickly.” Typically, homes were built in the early 20th century and still have old-fashioned characteristics. Architecturally, there are mountain-style ranches, chalets and modern-style homes. Prices for the ranches and chalets can range from $150,000 to $450,000, while modern homes can stretch up to $1.5 million. Being surrounded by nature can also draw animal friends. “We have deer, wild turkeys, bears, mountain lions, foxes, you may spot some elk. We have to lock our doors every night because bears may hop into the cars,” Ermel says. “You get excited when a bear passes in your yard.”

Adjacent to Pueblo Mountain Park
The Pueblo Mountain Park sits on the neighborhood’s edge. “That’s a huge draw because it’s right in the town,” Ermel says. “It’s about a 600-acre mountain park with miles of hiking trails connecting to the forest.” Those 6 miles of trails are open to foot and horse traffic. Besides the hiking trails, people can relax under the different gazebos and shelters or have a picnic. Lake Isabel, located 16 miles southeast, offers plenty of water activities. Parkgoers can spend their afternoons kayaking, canoeing or casting their lines for fish. Dry activities may involve birdwatching, hunting, biking and horseback riding. Also nearby is the San Isabel Snow Slide, a popular sledding spot.

Two restaurants and one general store
Beulah Valley has only one restaurant and a general store for shopping and dining. Major shopping will have to be completed in Pueblo. The Beulah Inn is the neighborhood diner serving American classics in a pub-style interior. Ermel says a pizza food truck is available on Mondays, and another truck may pop up on other days. The Beulah General Store is a neighborhood store that sells basic needs. “That store is basically a 7/11 on steroids,” Ermel says.

Thousands gather for Beulah Valley Arts and Crafts Festival
Events in Beulah Valley vary from significant events that draw out-of-towners to smaller gatherings for neighborhood folks. The Beulah Valley Arts and Crafts Festival has been a tradition for 68 years. Held in August, thousands head out to the Beulah School to view and purchase the crafts from the dozens of vendors and artisans. The event also includes live performers and children’s activities. Throughout the year are other seasonal events, including The Parade of Light, Halloween Boo Bash and their Yule Log. Ermel says there are also smaller weekly gatherings.
25-mile commute to Rye High School
The state of Colorado offers school choice, and Beulah Valley students can attend their studies in the Pueblo County School District 70. Kindergarten through eighth grade can be completed at Beulah School of Natural Sciences, which earns a B grade from Niche. Rye High School is a 25-mile drive from Beulah Valley. The B-minus school offers six different career or college prep academies.
Over 20 miles to major cities
Beulah Valley has no public transportation. Drivers needing to reach Pueblo can take Route 78 for a 26-mile drive. Drivers to Colorado City have a 19-mile drive through a series of backroads. While getting around these cities takes a car, getting around the neighborhood may involve a unique vehicle. “People take an afternoon drive in the golf carts, look at the wildlife, and wave at neighbors. You’ll see that’s just part of the community,” Ermel says.
Robust fire and ambulance system
Despite the isolation, Ermel says there’s a decent internet connection for streaming and regular use, as many people work from home. Despite being rural, Beulah Valley has a robust fire and ambulance system that stays on top of the nearby threats. “We have a good ambulance service. There’s a quick transport to Pueblo through the Flight for Life. We can be to doctors and hospital services within 20 minutes,” Ermel says. “There are big fires surrounding us, but they don’t reach our town. We have firemen camp out within our town.”

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
