Historic neighborhood with ample community resources
East Side is considered one of Pueblo’s historic and diverse neighborhoods. That diversity extends beyond ethnicity; it’s architecturally diverse, with homes tracing back to the city’s earlier settlement in the mid-1800s. But it’s also an area where community assistance is prevalent, whether through resources like the food bank and farmers' markets or the teachings from one of the over six churches in the neighborhood. “We certainly have a strong agriculture farming community. Fresh food is always close by here,” says Nicki Hart, longtime resident and business owner.

Architecturally diverse with some investment opportunities
East Side is primarily a bedroom community. Homes are on the smaller end, usually under 1,500 square feet. Some homes feature fenced-in yards, while others may have private driveways. ShiAnn Rodriguez, a realtor at Keller Williams Performance Realty in Pueblo, says the area sees many investors buying and modernizing homes. Styles tend to be turn-of-the-century bungalows to midcentury ranches. These prices range from 100,000 to $350,000. Two-story homes that are single or multi-family properties come in Victorian or Tudor styles. These prices range from $150,000 to $300,000. East Side houses are much lower compared to other parts of Pueblo. Empty lots are also a common sight, with those prices ranging from $15,000 to $100,000. Homeowners should be advised that the neighborhood has a 10 Risk Factor Score out of 10, meaning it has a higher fire risk.

Mexican restaurants along Fourth Avenue
East Side doesn’t have much of a dining scene; however, Downtown Pueblo is to the west and has several local spots to eat. Along Fourth Avenue are several Mexican restaurants, but Taco Salsa stands out for its efficient service and barbacoa tacos. Shamrock Brewing Company was the first craft brewery to open in the city, and it continues to be a fan favorite for its Irish beer and craic-or atmosphere. Also downtown is Burger Bingo, a casual spot with customizable vegetarian and regular burger options. Nick’s Dairy Crème is the sweet spot for a cold milkshake or an ice cream treat. The Eastside Farmers Market provides fresh produce on Saturdays from July through October. Then, the Sunny Side Market is an option for receiving healthy groceries free of charge. Along Dillon Drive are other major shopping stores, including Target, Walmart Supercenter and Hobby Lobby. The Pueblo Mall offers over 50 shops anchored by department stores Dillard’s and JCPenney.
Multiple pocket parks with splash areas
The East Side has a few pocket parks under 10 acres. Rodriguez noted that it’s not necessarily an area known for its walkability. Mitchell Park is the most central park in the neighborhood, offering a playground and water area with a pool and splash pad. Another playground is located to the north at Portland Park. Competitive games may also occur in the basketball court and open fields. Skaters may hit the ramps at the El Centro del Quinto Sol. Hikers may enjoy the Fountain Creek Trail, which stretches five miles along the neighborhood’s west side.

15,000 attend The Cannon Game
One of Pueblo’s most beloved traditions is high school football. “The high school focus is big and very interesting. It’s just different vibes than other cities,” Hart says. The main question around the area is, “What high school did you go to?” which relates to the intense high school rivalries. For East Side, that tradition is no different. The Cannon Game is the anticipated matchup of 60-year-old rivalries East High Eagles and South High Colts. Nearly 15,000 people watch the teams battle out at Dutch Clark Stadium for the Civil War-era cannon. The aftermath may involve the words ‘The Cannon Booms Black’ (South) or ‘The Cannon Booms Yellow’ (East).
Bordered by major interstates
East Side is bordered by three major roadways that are gateways through Pueblo and the Centennial State. Highway 96 travels east to west around Pueblo, reaching cities such as Westcliffe and Ordway. Route 50 is to the north of the neighborhood. This also travels east to west, reaching Canon City and La Junta. Interstate 25 runs through most of the state, reaching Denver and Colorado Springs. Those needing to travel locally can utilize the busing system. “We do have an airport; it’s smaller, but there is car service available,” Hart adds. Pueblo Memorial Airport offers flights to Denver.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
