Punta Gorda is on the banks of the Peace River, a gateway to the second-largest harbor in Florida. The city's historic downtown, community parks and pedestrian trail give it a small-town charm. Plus, the population is small, at just over 20,000. Locals find work in government jobs, education, commercial fishing and tourist industries, including Sunseekers Resort, just north in the city of Port Charlotte. Pastimes often revolve around the wide harbor. "We don't have a true beach, but all the fishing and boating here is incredible," says Janet Minerich, a Realtor with Re/Max Harbor Realty, Inc., who's lived in the area for 30 years.
