A culturally diverse, primarily residential neighborhood
During the 1900s, in its heyday, Bayswater was the summer destination for the cream of society, drawing in 48,000 visitors to its lively beaches. “Bayswater was New York’s Hamptons before the Hamptons became what they are now,” says Melissa Carrington, broker-owner with RE/MAX Elite and Rockaways native. Nowadays, the neighborhood is home to a year-round population of more than 17,000 people. On what was once the same site of the nationally recognized resort, Roche-Elms is presently the campus of Yeshiva Darchei Torah, an all-boys Jewish Orthodox school. Considering that more than 2,000 students are enrolled at the yeshiva and nearly 900 are enrolled at Frederick Douglass Academy High School, the numbers are telling of Bayswater’s diverse Jewish Orthodox population and the 20,000-plus immigrant population. Here, predominantly residential, house-lined streets surround one main thoroughfare, Rockaway Freeway. If the Manhattan skyline wasn’t visible along the shore, it would almost be possible to forget you’re in New York City.

Predominantly wood-framed single- and multi-family houses
Just along the southeastern shore of Jamaica Bay, the actual footprint of Bayswater is quite small, with just over a thousand homes. Made up almost entirely of single- and multi-family homes, the local architecture is mainly wood-framed in a few styles: Cape Cod, Dutch Colonial and Queen Anne. “Bayswater is known for its larger lots with detached prewar homes and manicured lawns,” says Carrington. A single-family, four-bedroom Cape Cod with a private driveway and a large, fenced yard goes for $565,000, while a two-story 1920s Dutch Colonial with 4,000 square feet fetches $830,000. A newly renovated, multi-family Queen Anne Victorian built in 1910 with 8 bedrooms lists for $850,000.
