Considered part of the larger Astoria area, Ditmars Steinway is a relaxed residential neighborhood bordered by the East River to the north. The prevalence of family homes, access to the expansive Astoria Park, and a wealth of dining options make this Queens enclave especially alluring. “Ditmars has a low-rise, residential feel,” says Patrick Smith, a licensed associate real estate broker with Corcoran who has been working in Astoria for 20 years. “On Ditmars Boulevard you have all the great restaurants and shops, access to Astoria Park, and you also have the train line on 31st Street.”

Brick townhouses and co-op buildings
A variety of architectural styles can be seen near Astoria Park, and there are many postwar brick buildings, constructed in the 1930s and ‘40s. Multifamily townhouses and single-family homes make up the majority of the housing. “The concentration of properties that are considered houses in Ditmars is much higher compared to the rest of Astoria,” says Smith. A few co-op buildings can be found, and a one or two-bedroom co-op in a 1920s-built building can cost between $225,000 and $389,000. A single-family brick home runs between $1 million to $1.6 million.
A traditional beer garden, plus many supermarkets
The main thoroughfare along Ditmars Boulevard offers an international array of cuisines, including Australian, Japanese, Southern and Italian. Grilled octopus and lemon potatoes make Greek seafood spot Taverna Kyclades especially popular. On 24th Avenue, Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden has been a mainstay for over a century. Regulars come for the Czech brews on tap, traditional bratwursts and events like movie screenings and Oktoberfest. The interior is spacious and outdoor picnic tables are shaded by large trees. Grocery stores and supermarkets are located throughout the community. On the north side of the neighborhood, Lidl is on 37th Street. Fresh produce and household items are available at Berry Fresh Farm supermarket and Ditmars Boulevard Supermarket.
Tennis courts and a pool at Astoria Park
The sprawling Astoria Park covers nearly 60 acres along the East River and offers panoramic views of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Hell Gate Bridge. In addition to playgrounds, there's a running track, a skate park and tennis courts. Numerous fields offer areas to play soccer. Astoria Pool, in the center of the park, is the city's oldest and largest public pool.
Annual events, including Fourth of July fireworks
Events and festivals happen throughout the year along Steinway Street. In December performers and local businesses celebrate the holidays with family-friendly activities and booths. At Halloween residents turn out in costume for a parade and block party. To celebrate Independence Day, hundreds gather in Astoria Park to enjoy music performances and watch the fireworks display.
Well-regarded schools with arts activities
PS 122 Mamie Fay serves students in pre-K through eighth grade and has an A rating from Niche. IS 141 The Steinway is ranked in the top ten percent of best public middle schools in New York and has an A rating from Niche. William Cullen Bryant High School has a B rating from Niche, and offers activities like jazz band and choir, plus English classes for parents on Saturdays.
Limited subway access, but buses and CitiBikes
Transportation can be a bit of a challenge, as only the N and W trains have a stop at Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard. Buses provide additional access to the neighborhood and surrounding areas, and there are numerous Citi Bike stations. Interstate 278 runs along the edge of the neighborhood, providing a connection for drivers. LaGuardia Airport is less than three miles away.
