In northwestern Queens, Jackson Heights is known for its diversity of languages and cultures. With some 160 languages spoken, the cultural melting pot is evident in the range of restaurants and shops found throughout the neighborhood. Residents appreciate the rich texture, proximity to Manhattan, and spacious housing options. “A lot of first-time home buyers who are searching for more space and easy access to the city are interested in Jackson Heights,” says Stephanie McNeil, an Associate Real Estate Broker with FILO Real Estate Group who has been working in the area since 2013. “They love the prewar charm of a lot of the coops in this area and the greenspaces that Jackson Heights has updated. People like the diversity of different cultures as well.”

Many coop buildings and some family homes
The neighborhood is notable for its midrise prewar brick buildings and larger family homes. “Maybe 80% of the housing is coops and then the remaining 20% is a mix of attached single-families, multi-families, and detached houses,” says McNeil. A one-bedroom in a prewar or midcentury brick coop building runs between $200,000 to $450,000. A semi-detached or detached home costs between $1 million and $2.3 million. Condos are rare, though a two-bedroom condo in the six-story Stratford Hall building can cost between $670,00 and $780,000. A historic district with landmarked buildings runs between Roosevelt Avenue and 34th Avenue from 76th Street to 88th Street, and a few blocks feature English Tudor homes.
