Forest Park, culture and more in this historic Queens neighborhood

Richmond Hill is a historic, highly diverse Queens neighborhood. Jamaica’s to the east, Woodhaven’s to the west and an assortment of Indo-Caribbean eateries, shops and events are all around. “Richmond Hill is a unique location,” says Chatter Singh, a Realtor with Keller Williams Liberty who has been selling homes for 10 years and is a longtime Queens resident from the Richmond Hill area. “It’s close to Forest Park, which has wildlife like you would never expect to find in New York City and just about every sports field you can imagine.” Beyond investors, the neighborhood’s convenience to the park, restaurants and multiple bustling metro stops is attracting people from around the world. “The housing prices have continued to increase, and the demographics have always been in flux. We have every nationality in this part of Queens, as well as Jewish, Catholic, Baptist and Buddhist communities,” says Regina Santoro Schaefer, associate real estate broker with Parkside Realty of Queens. Santoro has been selling homes in Queens for 15 years and has lived in or near Richmond Hill for much of her life. “We welcome them all, and everyone seems to get along.”

Historic Victorian homes, condos and co-ops

North of Atlantic Avenue, many homes follow stately Colonial Revival and Victorian designs, with many dating between 1890 and 1930. “A lot of homes have large porches or verandas. Some have turrets and an abundance of stained-glass windows,” says Santoro, who is a board member of the Richmond Hill Historical Society. “Residents in the historic district can apply for city funding, and they will give you tax credits if you historically protect your house.” Streetscapes are slightly different on the other side of Atlantic Ave. “South Richmond Hill has more attached or semi-attached homes with shared driveways, so the area is more densely populated,” Santoro says. But the contrast between the two sides of Richmond Hill might grow stronger if taller buildings come in. “Some streets on the north side like Myrtle Avenue have been upzoned so they can build higher, while the side streets are protected. South Richmond Hill hasn’t been upzoned.” Single-family homes ready for some sprucing up begin at $400,000. Turnkey homes start closer to $600,000, with prices usually reaching $1.2 million. Builds with over 2,000 square feet of interior space can get up to $1.8 million. Four-bedroom multifamily homes start around $600,000, and six-bedroom houses can reach $1.3 million. Co-ops range from $200,000 to $370,000. One-bedroom condos go for about $370,000.

West Indian groceries, a 195-year-old tavern and houses of worship

A CTown Supermarket and a few Key Food Supermarkets are located in or near Richmond Hill. For specialty foods, shoppers can visit J & B West Indian Grocery or Apna Bazar. Residents are all within a mile of a grocery store. Visting restaurants along Jamaica Avenue is like going on a culinary tour of the world. Caribbean Cabana serves up jerk chicken, while Caleta 111 is known for their ceviche and Peruvian cuisine. Liberty Avenue features an abundance of West Indian eateries, such as Singh’s Roti Shop and Sibyl’s. Residents can pick up the ingredients they need to prepare Caribbean dishes of their own at Little Guyana Bake Shop, J & B West Indian Grocery and Apna Bazar, as well as a CTown Supermarket and a few Key Food grocery stores. Located in neighboring Woodhaven, Neir’s Tavern has been in operation since 1829, making it one of the country’s oldest bars. The tavern has seen a lot through its days, functioning as a speakeasy during prohibition and appearing prominently in the film Goodfellas. When the bar was set to close in 2020 because of rising rent costs, community members successfully arranged for the landlord and restaurant owners to renegotiate the rent. The hope is the tavern can survive for another 200 years. Various houses of worship sit in and around the neighborhood, from Catholic churches to Hindu mandirs and Sikh gurudwaras.

A beloved local park and one of Queens’ largest green spaces

Phil “Scooter” Rizzuto Park, still known to locals by its former name, “Smokey Park,” sits off Atlantic Avenue. Many residents visit the park to play cricket, but the park’s field can also be used for baseball and soccer. Other amenities include basketball courts and a playground. Queen’s third biggest park, Forest Park, lies just north of Richmond Hill, less than 2 miles from most homes. This 165-acre green space lives up to its name, offering several miles of arboreal hiking, biking and equestrian trails, plus a spacious golf course and historic carousel. Red-tailed hawks, herons, great egrets and other birds migrate to the park seasonally. Cinemart Cinemas up on Metropolitan Avenue showcases an eclectic variety of films from recent blockbuster hits to independent art house films. Pocket parks in and around the neighborhood include Lt. Frank McConnell Park, which is wedged between two roads and offers benches, and Maurice A. FitzGerald Playground.

Little Guyana’s Festival of Lights

The Diwali Festival in Little Guyana to the south is one of the largest events near Richmond Hill. “It’s very colorful. Everyone in the community comes to visit. And so do people from outside and local officials,” Singh says. “There’s lots of dancing and bands, and floats come down Liberty Avenue.”

Richmond Hill High gives students real-world experience

Elementary schools that serve local students include P.S. 62 Chester Park, which receives a B-plus from Niche, and P.S. 90 Horace Mann, which gets a B. Middle schools include B-plus-rated M.S. 137 America’s School of Heroes. B-rated Richmond Hill High offers several career academies for students to explore career paths and participate in work-based learning. Academies include hospitality and tourism; law and forensics; and software engineering. “Richmond Hill High got a $5 million fund to open up a culinary school,” Santoro says. “They will be building a state-of-the-art culinary kitchen with commercial stoves and refrigerators. It’s going to be a huge magnet for kids.”

Between two airports, highways and Jamaica station

The J/Z metro line follows Jamaica Avenue through Richmond Hill. The A line runs parallel, following Liberty Avenue and terminating at the Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard station. Jamaica station, one of the busiest transit hubs in the country, sits less than half a mile east. Here, commuters can board the Long Island Rail Road, a commuter railroad, and the Air Train, which delivers travelers to John F. Kennedy International Airport 5 miles south. On the other hand, La Guardia Airport is 8 miles north, though drivers can expect heavy traffic. Several buses serve residents such as Q10, which heads south to J.F.K. Airport. Interstate 678, also known here as the Van Wyck Expressway, sits on the eastern border of the neighborhood, running north-to-south across Long Island to the Bronx. The highway leads north to Interstate 495, also known as the Long Island Expressway for running across the island.
