Urban Core Neighborhood in Queens, New York
Queens County 11413, 11434
With wide lawns and quiet streets, an on ramp to the Belt Parkway and a stop on the Long Island Rail Road within walking distance, Rochdale is a commuter’s haven. But with Far Rockaway Beach under 30 minutes away by car and John F. Kennedy Airport just over a mile to the south, residents of this small neighborhood in Southeast Queens can get away just as easily as they can get to work.
Rochdale often feels more like Long Island than New York City. “The community has done a good job of keeping zoning to single family homes, despite growth,” says Queens-bred Chatter Singh, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Liberty. Big Victorians on ample lots are selling between $600,000 and $800,000. Some streets are bisected by medians planted with Ginkgo trees, giving the neighborhood a more spacious feel. Boxy midcentury split-level homes with five or more bedrooms are listed from $1 million to $1.5 million. Most homes have their own driveways, but parking in Rochdale is a breeze, just like the weather.
Rochdale is only 2 miles away from Jamaica Bay, and it benefits from cool winds that blow off the water. Plenty of residents park their seagoing vehicles in nearby marinas. The 100-acre Baisley Pond Park sits on the eastern edge of the locality, offering cricket pitches, playgrounds and a 30-acre pond for residents to enjoy. Gwen Ifill Park on the northwestern edge of Rochdale is a naturalist's paradise with 16 acres of preserved habitat for migratory birds and native plants. Residents will find supermarkets, restaurants and a variety of local business along the main thoroughfares bordering and crisscrossing this small neighborhood. Several Nigerian restaurants call the surrounding area home and Tropical Grill in Rochdale is considered the best.
There are public, charter and private schools to choose from in and around Rochdale. The Thurgood Marshall Magnet School of Multimedia and Communication is an elementary school that uses a Socratic model to engage students in critical thinking. Collaborative Arts Middle School is in the top quartile of NYC schools according to the city Department of Education. According to Great Schools, local August Martin High School prepares its students for college at a level that is above average compared to surrounding public high schools.
The Locust Manor station of the Long Island Rail Road is next door to Gwen Ifill Park and only one stop away from the transportation hub of Jamaica Center where travelers can catch the Air Train to JFK or the subway to Manhattan. Downtown New York City is only 45 minutes from Rochdale by train and subway, which makes its faster than driving. Residents of Rochdale get a little bit of Queens and a lot of Long Island for a relatively low cost.
