Waterfront community with million-dollar homes and highly-rated schools
An affluent neighborhood in the northernmost part of Queens, Whitestone is a residential riverfront community with a broad range of architecture lining its quiet, leafy streets. The namesake bridge is a scenic backdrop across the East River, connecting residents to the Bronx and major intersecting highways — and giving Whitestone its reputation as the Gateway to Queens. “It’s a centrally located neighborhood where you can easily hop onto the Whitestone Bridge, or you could be in Bayside in five minutes or Flushing in 10 minutes,” says Salvatore Sica, a licensed real estate agent with Compass. Despite its almost suburban feel, this is no cookie-cutter community; single-family homes are characterized by various architectural styles, from contemporary designs to Victorian, colonial- and ranch-styles, as well as quaint garden co-ops found in the neighborhood’s center and southeastern areas. Unlike many other parts of the city, Whitestone homes typically have ample lawns and backyard areas, further adding to the neighborhood’s appeal.

A diverse housing market with various styles
Whitestone has an eclectic range of single-family home styles, from contemporary colonial-style mansions and modern designs to Cape Cod, Victorian and Mediterranean styles. Single-family homes typically range between the $990,000 and $2.8 million mark. Though most homes were built in the early to mid-20th century, some new energy-efficient homes are also on the market, starting at $2 million. Quaint brick ranch-style homes near the water can start at $1.1 million, as well as multi-bedroom single-family properties near the park, some with views of the East River and Whitestone Bridge. Garden-style co-ops are primarily found around and south of the Cross Island Parkway, with prices ranging from $225,000 to $258,000 for a one-bedroom. More co-ops are centered around Utopia Parkway, with two-bedrooms often ranging from $265,000 to $380,000. A few postwar condos in low- to mid-rise buildings are also available, starting at $475,000.

Panoramic river views at Francis Lewis Park
Francis Lewis Park, a riverfront greenspace that most locals call Whitestone Park, sits beneath the scenic stretch of the Whitestone Bridge. “It’s great for walking the dog, taking your kids, or just getting some fresh air,” says Sica. Locals generally use the area for casual strolls along the water, but residents can also access basketball and bocce courts and playgrounds. Kayak and canoe launches allow water access into the East River. Boaters can also access the river from the docks at Malba Field & Marine Club in the neighboring community of Malba, located just west of the neighborhood. Farther south, Harvey Park has additional outdoor recreational amenities, including baseball fields and playgrounds with a splash pad. To the east of the neighborhood, Little Bay Park features a scenic dog run and popular roller hockey rink, and sits adjacent to Fort Totten Park. A former U.S. Army installation, the 60-acre tract is a recreational destination for its large athletic fields, expansive green spaces, sports complex and public pool. The park is also home to a preserved Civil War fortress.

Standout, A-rated schools
P.S. 79 Francis Lewis, an A-rated elementary school on Niche, is ranked in the top 20 standout elementary schools in all of New York. Parents praise the school’s attentive teachers. The neighborhood contains two other A-rated elementary schools nearby: P.S. 193 Alfred J. Kennedy and Flushing Christian School, a private faith-based institution. J.H.S. 194 William Carr, which also earns an A, serves sixth through eighth graders. High schoolers may attend Bayside High School, which has an A-minus rating and is listed among the top six standout high schools in the state.
Diverse restaurants and local haunts, convenient shopping
Though few, most of the neighborhood’s restaurants center around the Cross Island Parkway. Villaggio is known for its excellent wood-fired pizzas, Tutto Calcio is the go-to for a quick lunch or coffee and Taco Azul is the favored Mexican spot. For popular Vietnamese pho and steamed buns, locals head to Ginger and Lemongrass. The nearby Sergimmo Salumeria, a much-loved Italian deli, is a “staple of the neighborhood,” according to Sica.
Whitestone Plaza is the primary shopping area, where residents can pick up basic necessities at the pharmacy, stop into a salon for a haircut or get groceries and produce at North Shore Farms, an upscale supermarket. Whitestone Shopping Center is conveniently located near the Parkway and is home to a Key Food supermarket, while big-box retailers such as Target, T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods sit within the College Point Center close by.

Local events bring the community together
The Whitestone Civic Association, a non-profit group of volunteers, hosts a handful of community events for the Whitestone neighborhood. Seasonal get-togethers include an annual Family Fun Day. Held in October at Francis Lewis Park, the Saturday event invites families to enjoy a day of games, music and food. Pony rides and face painting are available, as well as inflatable houses. Decorated cars line up at the Harpell’s parking lot at the end of October for the association’s Trunk-or-Treat event, which is complete with prizes and giveaways.
Convenient connections for drivers and bus riders
Most residents in Whitestone rely on cars for transportation, as no subway stations serve the neighborhood. The LIRR can be accessed farther south at the Port Washington Branch, which also connects to the 7 train. Express and local buses are primarily found along 150th Street, including the Q15A. The Cross Island Parkway cuts right through the neighborhood, the Whitestone Bridge connects to the Bronx, and the Whitestone Expressway brings commuters into Manhattan, trip of approximately 13 miles. LaGuardia Airport is 7 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
