Not quite on the outskirts but surrounded by green space and tucked in a bend of the Root River, Racine’s neighborhood of Island Park is somewhat separated from the rest of the city while remaining close enough to enjoy its amenities. The neighborhood lies 2 miles west of downtown Racine, less than a mile from two small commercial areas that hold local shops and restaurants and just across the street from one of the city’s best high schools. “The Root River is right there and a lot of people go fishing there,” says William Reyes Gonzalez, Realtor/broker with Only Real Estate Group. “And it’s close to everything in Racine. The neighborhood is zoned for Fratt Elementary School for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade, and then Mitchell Elementary for sixth through eighth, rated a C and a C-minus respectively by Niche. Other nearby options include Jerstad-Agerholm School, which earns a C-minus, or Mitchell for the full kindergarten through eighth-grade experience. Most will finish up at Park High School, which is rated a B-minus. Founded in 1972, B-plus-rated Walden III High School is one of two magnet high schools in the area. With The Walden Green School Initiative, Walden encourages students to engage in environmentally responsible practices like recycling and planning future environmental programs. In 2008, students of the program helped get solar panels installed on the school’s roof.
For parents seeking private schooling, Racine Lutheran High is within the neighborhood itself and walkable for most residents. Home for grades nine through 12, the school is graded a B by Niche. It also brings in extra traffic through the neighborhood at the open and close of the school day.
