Transitional period for community near downtown Racine
Midtown, formerly known as Uptown, is a gateway neighborhood before reaching downtown Racine. Once a thriving retail district, many businesses relocated to the suburbs, but some business owners believe the area is undergoing a transitional period. “Over the nine years since I’ve had my florist shop, our area still has that Racine family-friendly feel,” says Felicia Cooper, owner of Petals by Felicia. “Local business owners will return to our community because our people are very friendly and supportive.”
RYDE Racine, the city’s public transportation system, offers several bus stops throughout Midtown. Washington Avenue, a hub for family-owned restaurants and mom-and-pop shops, also provides a direct route to downtown. Community involvement remains strong in Midtown, exemplified by the Racine Urban Garden Network, a community garden that grows sustainable food resources.
Renovated 19th-century homes throughout the Midtown neighborhood
This car-dependent neighborhood features late 19th- and early 20th-century homes on small lots, usually around a tenth of an acre. Most either require renovations or have been fully renovated, and many are surrounded by low fencing for containing children and pets. Ranch-style homes needing renovations are priced between $60,000 and $120,000, while newly renovated four-square homes and cottages typically range from $160,000 to $200,000. Union Pacific north line runs through the community, with freight traffic resulting in railway noise for homeowners

Washington Ave is a hub for family-owned retail and restaurants
Midtown’s main thoroughfare, Washington Avenue, is home to various family-owned restaurants and local mom-and-pop stores. Esperanza Coffee Collective, a Guatemalan family-owned café, features a drive-thru, while Petals by Felicia is a family-operated florist shop serving the Midtown area. “We are a full-service florist shop with an emphasis on serving events that affect families,” says Cooper, “I even sell a family spread of flowers for any occasion.”
Within the neighborhood, Tino’s Carry Out offers Chicago-style comfort food, while the family-owned Kabab and Grill serves authentic Indian and Pakistani cuisine in bowls and wraps. The nearest grocery stop, Piggly Wiggly, is located two miles outside the neighborhood. “While there are chains like Piggly Wiggly in the area, most residents in Racine rarely shop at the local grocery stores,” said Kimberly Mann, a real estate agent with Russell Mann Real Estate, who notes that many residents opt for delivery or head to big-box and bulk stores like Costco.

Cultivate sustainable food resources with Racine Urban Garden Network
In 2009, approximately 75 people in the Midtown area came together to address food security by creating sustainable resources for Racine, leading to the establishment of the Racine Urban Garden Network. Since then, the community garden initiative has grown to include more than 10 sites with over 300 plots producing food such as zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, and potatoes. Midtown has two garden sites: one at the end of Carroll Street and another along the Root River on Marquette Street.

Summer educational events at REC
The Root River Environmental Education Community Center, referred to as the REC, is located across the Memorial Drive Bridge. It operates seasonally to promote the Root River and its surrounding environment. The center offers volunteer activities, wildlife programs, and week-long science camps for middle school students. Each year, before the start of school, the REC hosts more than 1,500 fourth-grade students from the Racine Unified School District to educate them about the Root River watershed. During the summer, kayaking and canoe rentals are available as part of a season pass.
Downtown Racine and the Lake Michigan lakefront are only a mile or two away for other events throughout the year, ranging from holiday tree lightings to concerts in the summer.
