Waterfront amenities and a lower price tag in north Racine
Three miles from Lake Michigan, Shorecrest is close to the sandy beaches and waterfront shops and restaurants that define Racine. Within this residential nook, smaller starter homes with lower price tags appeal to first-time homebuyers and downsizers. "I sold a house a few years ago to a couple in a condo, and they wanted to retire and garden, so this is a neighborhood where you can do that," says Jeanne Williams, Realtor with Coldwell Banker in Racine. Residents also appreciate the neighborhood's updated primary school and below-average CAP Index crime score.
Midcentury starter homes on smaller lots
Shorecrest is filled with midcentury homes on smaller lots, typical in Racine. However, the pricing is unique for the town's north side. "It's going to be the starter homes under the $250,000 range, which is rare for that area of Racine," Williams says. Brick ranch, Minimal Traditional and Cape Cod-style homes from the 1950s and '60s sell for between $150,000 and $330,000. Residents show pride in ownership with neat lawns and landscaping. Despite lot sizes maxing out around 8,000 square feet, residents make the most of their space with the occasional backyard pool. Residents typically park on side driveways and detached one-car garages. Those who live in the northwest corner may get noise from the adjacent quarry and Batten Airport.
In Shorecrest, Cape Cod homes are well represented.
The occasional little free library can be found next to Shorecrest's ranch style homes.

State Route 32 goes to Milwaukee

Lake effect causes extra snow
Despite its waterfront location, Shorecrest shows a minimal risk of flooding. However, Lake Michigan does cause extra wintertime precipitation. Cool air moving across the lake's warm waters causes concentrated lake-effect snowfall.
