Hillsborough is home to culture and a campus

Hillsborough is best known for Hillsborough Street, where college town vibes meet big city amenities. This area also encapsulates North Carolina State University’s southern campus and residential areas with single-family homes and condos. “It’s a very walkable area with access to restaurants, coffee shops, community theatres and more,” says Devon Howard, director of engagement at Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation. “The street is a vibrant, unique corridor within the City of Raleigh.” Several events and festivals happen on Hillsborough Street throughout the year. Hillsborough is also home to Pullen Park, North Carolina’s first public park, founded in 1887.

Homes and condos in a friendly community

“Hillsborough Street is primarily apartments with condos in the pipeline,” Howard says. “Single-family homes surround the district to the north, with a healthy mix of students and yearlong residents, making for a youthful and friendly atmosphere.” The majority of single-family homes are in the Forest Park subdivision. Housing styles vary from bungalows and ranch-styles to larger Craftsman and cottages. Most were built in the 1920s and 30s, but some newer homes were constructed in the late 2010s and as recently as 2025. Prices start at $650,000 and go up to $1.9 million. Townhouses under 1,500 square feet range from $380,000 to $550,000. Townhouses over 2,000 square feet sell for $790,000 to $1.55 million. One- to two-bedroom condos go for between $235,000 and to almost $670,000. Three-bedroom condos are priced from just over $760,000 to over $1.67 million.

Takeout or dining in on Hillsborough Street

The bustling Hillsborough Street has department stores and chain restaurants, like Target and Chick-fil-A, as well as local spots like Jubala Coffee and Mitch’s Tavern — the oldest place on Hillsborough Street. “Being next door to a college campus, prices tend to be accessible while not sacrificing taste," Howard says. "Most locations have places to eat both indoors and outdoors, but takeout is also pretty substantial and easy to access.” Shops at Village District has a Harris Teeter and several other shops and eateries. Bars, Breweries and eateries line Glenwood Avenue. Hibernian Pub brings a taste of Ireland to Raleigh. Gregg Museum of Art and Design is on NC State’s north campus. Hillsborough Street is the locale for events like the City of Oaks Marathon and a local music series. “Hillsborough Street's biggest event every year is Packapalooza,” Howard says. “It's so well attended because it's an opportunity to kick off the academic year with music, entertainment, family-friendly activities, food, and all things Wolfpack.”

Pullen Park's many amenities and other green spaces

In addition to more traditional park amenities like playgrounds and sports courts, Pullen Park has amusement rides. “It is incredibly popular at all times of year,” Howard says. “In terms of outdoor activities, renting a pedal boat or riding a carousel are two of the top attractions. Unless it's wintertime, where the Holiday Express is a sellout event every year.” Swimming lessons are available at the Pullen Aquatic Center, and art classes and gallery exhibits are offered at the Pullen Arts Center. Visitors can get a drink and a bite to eat at Pullen Place Cafe and see a play at the Theatre in the Park. The WRAL Azalea Garden blooms flowers and trees every spring and is open seven days a week. Fred Fletcher Park is a smaller green space with a water garden and an amphitheater.

Highly-rated Wake County Public Schools

Elementary schools in the neighborhood can vary, but most students are zoned for Wiley Magnet Elementary, which earns an A-minus grade on Niche. Oberlin Magnet Middle and Broughton Magnet High also receive A-minuses. As a magnet school, Broughton specializes in global studies and language immersion. Students can also request to join the Academy of Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Marketing. Wake County Public School System offers school choice, so families can apply to attend any magnet and early college schools they are zoned for through a lottery system. New families could be reassigned to an overflow school if a base school reaches its enrollment cap. North Carolina State University has A rating on Niche.

Navigating the neighborhood by car, bike or bus

Hillsborough is a highly walkable and bike-friendly area. There are GoRaleigh bus stops on Hillsborough Street and other roads in the neighborhood. The 1.5-mile drive to downtown Raleigh takes about 5 minutes. In around 4 miles, drivers can reach Interstate 440, the area’s inner beltline that almost encircles all of central Raleigh. On Interstate 40, the trip to Raleigh-Durham International Airport is around 12 miles.
