Contemporary suburban living near one of the Triangle’s biggest backyards
Most of Umstead’s homes sit north and east of the park, which lends the neighborhood its name. Late 20th-century subdivisions with new traditional, modern farmhouse and rustic styles make up much of the properties near the north side of Leesville Road. Larger executive houses with ample square footage and 21st-century comforts are more common near Ebenezer Church Road on the neighborhood’s east side. Buyers can also find a few townhouses, some condos, and scattered older homes with updates. Prices range from the $230,000s up to $1.7 million for homes in the area, with the average single-family home selling for about $459,000.

Student-driven schools in Wake County
The Wake County Public School System serves students in Umstead and its surrounding areas in greater Raleigh. Schools in the area include Sycamore Creek Elementary, one of 25 elementary schools in the system that runs on a year-round schedule with short breaks for students throughout the calendar year instead of a long summer break. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1 and holds an A grade on Niche. The A-ranked Pine Hollow Middle School also runs on the year-round calendar and offers 27 clubs and 10 athletic programs. Students at Leesville Road High School can enroll in 20 different Advanced Placement courses to earn double credits for college. The school earns an A grade on Niche. For private education, Cardinal Gibbons High, an A-plus-ranked Roman Catholic school known for its athletic programs, is just south of Umstead Park on Edwards Mill Road.

Recreational bliss at Umstead State Park
Most of Umstead’s east end is occupied by William B. Umstead State Park, the area’s eponymous park. With more than 5,000 acres of protected land, residents can enjoy dedicated paths for hikes, mountain biking and horseback riding under thick cover of oak and beech trees. Locals can also rent boats to go fishing or paddling on Crabtree Creek, do some nature watching or enjoy a picnic at the park. Residents can also find a playground, additional trails and a volleyball court at the neighboring Lake Crabtree County Park, southwest of the neighborhood.

Reliable retail and restaurants at Brier Creek and Crabtree
Multiple small shopping centers surround Umstead. Leesville Towne Centre sits close to Interstate 540 and Leesville Highway. Locals can get grocery shopping done at Harris Teeter, a Raleigh mainstay, or at Publix, a newcomer to the area. Locals can put together their own stir-fry meals and ring the gong at Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill or treat themselves to dessert from Goodberry’s Frozen Custard. Close to Edwards Mill Road, citizens can shop at Harris Teeter and Walgreens, grab lunch from Char-Grill or enjoy New American dinners at The Mill. The Angus Barn sits close to Glenwood Avenue on the north side. A variety of big box shopping options are available at Brier Creek further north, and to the east, residents can visit specialty shops at Crabtree, Raleigh’s largest shopping mall.

Simple commutes to Research Triangle Park and the airport
Raleigh-Durham International Airport sits on the west side of the Umstead area. The neighborhood connects to greater Raleigh through multiple major highways and thoroughfares. Interstate 540/Northern Wake Expressway runs from the neighborhood’s northeast side to the west, while Interstate 40 defines the area’s south end. Edwards Mill Road, Duraleigh Road and Ebenezer Church Road run along the east side of the park. Glenwood Avenue runs north of Umstead Park and the airport, meeting with I-540 near the Brier Creek neighborhood to the north. Residents on the north side of the neighborhood can count on WakeMed Brier Creek for medical emergencies, while UNC Rex Hospital is a closer option for residents on the east side of the neighborhood. Like much of suburban Raleigh, public transit is limited, though residents near the Edwards Mill portion of the neighborhood can find some GoRaleigh bus stops nearby. Citizens can reach Research Triangle Park with an 8 mile drive west and Downtown Raleigh with an 11-mile drive south.
