Affordable farmhouses and homesteads close to Gainesville and major highways

South of Lake Orange, amid open pastures, lies the community of Citra. This community has historically been a citrus-growing district famous for its unique "pineapple-orange" variety, named because of the orange's pineapple-like aroma. The community is centrally located between Ocala and Gainesville and offers plenty of open space where residents can "get away from all the hubbub. People can afford to live in Citra, with very affordable cost of living and plenty of space," says EXP Realtor Joe Brown. Tranquil homes live beside rolling farmland along connecting highways and country roads, close to the natural beauty offered by Lake Orange.

Open pastures and tranquil rural homesteads

Gentle rolling farmland lies on either side of Old US Highway 301 as locals drive north through Citra. It's common to see friendly horses in Citra's pastures and for horseback riders to mosey down the road. A range of different home styles are available in Citra, and according to EXP Realtor Joe Brown, "all walks of life live here to be in God's Country." Joe Brown has over $27 million in total sales and says locals "have easy access to hunting and fishing; they have the best of both worlds living in Citra." Ranch-style and manufactured homes are the most common home styles in the area, and most were built from the 1980s onward. Prices range from $100,000 for a modest home on less than a half-acre all the way up to $795,000 for a contemporary farmhouse on over 10 acres of land.

Friendly local horses and hiking around Lake Orange

Proximity to Orange Lake and the vast open country gives locals plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. "You get out there into God's Country, there's plenty of fishing and hunting to do," says EXP Realtor Joe Brown, and the prevalence of horse farms gives locals the opportunity to see friendly horses on their walkabouts. Fitness enthusiasts can head to Wrigley Park, along US Highway 301, which offers massive baseball fields, a playground and a paved walking trail. Further to the north is the Orange Creek Conservation Area, where locals can paddle around on kayaks or hike through the pristine wetland landscape.
