Redding's revitalized downtown
Downtown Redding is the city's hub of activity. Its pedestrian squares and growing restaurant scene are a big hit with locals like Richard Howe, a Realtor with Better Homes & Gardens Realty who's lived in Redding since 1976. He remembers that it wasn't always this way. "The activity had shifted away from downtown for a while, but everything is getting amped up," says Howe. "There used to be a mall on California and Market Street, but it wasn't super popular, so they tore it down and started developing a real downtown with spaces for restaurants and new businesses." Walkability is paramount in this new development. Wide walkways and brick streets were laid down on Market Street to limit car traffic, allowing locals to comfortably walk to the restaurants, cafés and vintage shops. Although, downtown isn't all new. The neighborhood's residential streets to the north and south of its commercial center are lined with 1930s homes. From either direction, residents can use the grid streets to easily reach the city's best dining and activity.

Restaurants and shops off Market Street
Market Street is the heart of Downtown Redding's revitalization. Generous walkways create a buzzing environment for shopping and dining at spots like From the Hearth Kitchen & Pie Shop. This restaurant's sandwiches, soups and pies — like salted caramel apple — cater to those who want sweet and savory. New Clairvaux Vineyard's tasting room allows residents to sip local vintages. Vintage threads can be found at Friday's Vintage Co., a couple of blocks west. These new spots get a lot of attention, but downtown also has some storied locations. "Jack's Grill is one of the staple points of Redding," says Howe, "It's just one of those places you have to go to if you live here." Jack's Grill has been serving steaks and shrimp cocktails since 1938, and the décor hasn't changed since the doors opened. Damburger has also been serving locals smash burgers since 1938. Residents get their essentials at Safeway, which is less than a mile from homes on the south side and just over a mile from homes on the north. Retail shopping at Mt. Shasta Mall is a couple of miles east.

Redding Beer & Wine Festival
The Redding Beer & Wine Festival is one of Downtown Redding's biggest events. In late September, local breweries, wineries and restaurants set up stations in Market Street's pedestrian square for this day-long event. Residents can sip and stroll while listening to live bands on the street and then walk home just a few blocks away.

1930s cottages and Colonial Revivals
There are a few rows of homes on the north side, but most of the neighborhood's homes are south of its commercial heart. The tall trees and grassy front lawns are a sharp contrast to the restaurants and businesses a few blocks north. Small 1930s cottages sit close together and are given a bit of privacy by shady oaks and pines. These homes have remained through the neighborhood's growth and display the changes in architectural preferences, from Craftsman and midcentury modern to colonial and Tudor inspirations. Prices mainly depend on yard space and how well-kept the home is. A three-bedroom that needs some updates and has a small yard can cost around $175,000. A similar-sized home with colonial-style wood siding and a larger lawn and back patio can reach $450,000. Despite having fewer homes, the north side has a few larger options closer to the Sacramento River. These four-bedroom Tudors and Spanish Revivals hail from the 1920s and go for $500,000 to $650,000.

Community Parks and the Sacramento River Trail
South City Park is a convenient recreation spot for folks on the south side. South City has ample green space and shady trees for relaxing, and the residents use the tennis courts for neighborly matches. Little Leaguers play games on the softball and baseball fields. Martin Luther King Jr. Park offers another bit of green space on the south side, and kids can take advantage of the playground. Residents also enjoy the Sacramento River to the north. The Sacramento River Trail can be accessed less than a mile from the north side and about 2 miles north from south side homes. Hikers and bikers can comfortably traverse the paved trail along the tree-studded riverbanks.

The Shasta Regional Medical Center is close to the center of the neighborhood, a few blocks east of Market Street. Folks can catch the city bus at a few points in the residential areas. Residents on the south side can catch the bus to Shasta Regional at Lincoln Street and Market Street, and there's a stop on the north side at Trinity Street and California Street. Mercy Medical Center is on the neighborhood's south end, less than a mile from many homes.

Wildfires in the surrounding hills
The dry, wooded hills surrounding Redding are a common place for small brush fires, and they occasionally become large wildfires. Downtown Redding is less likely to be directly damaged by a wildfire because it's in the city center. Still, residents are encouraged to mitigate potential damage and the spread of wildfires by removing flammable brush and materials from the perimeter of their homes. It's also essential to have a proper evacuation plan in the event of a fire.
Downtown Redding is a beautiful location with rivers, mountains and nature as its backdrop.
