Far east Redding community near higher education and golfing

Tucked between the public Shasta College and the private, faith-based Simpson University along Highway 299, Hawley is a blend of subdivisions to the west and an expansive open area to the east. Residential streets are hemmed in by two north-south corridors: Hawley Road and Twin Tower Drive. Both are accessible from Highway 299, but they eventually end within the neighborhood, keeping the community free of through traffic. Dirt trails that etch its eastern undeveloped area lead to Shasta College, and within the southern portion, a new, nearly 60-acre Collyer Campus of Bethel Church is under construction. Residents aren't likely to say they live "in Hawley" but rather "out by Shasta College," as the college is integral to the community and is a draw based on proximity. The expansion of Bethel, a mega-church with its own music label and more than 11,000 congregants across five campuses, will bring more than $10 million worth of traffic improvements, including road widening, new signals and turnabouts to the community's landscape. Hawley is just 2 miles east of Bethel's main Redding campus on College View Drive, which connects with Simpson University. Residents are also only 6 miles north of popular destinations in Downtown Redding along the Sacramento River.

Modern ranch and two-story homes from $400,000 to $850,000

Contemporary ranch-style homes built in the 1990s of siding and brick are priced between $400,000 and $515,000. Modern colonial-style two-story homes and fully remodeled ranch styles constructed in the 2000s and beyond ask from $750,000 to $850,000. Many homes have backyard pools for keeping cool in the Redding summer heat, and roads intermittently offer sidewalks. Lots allow breathing room between most yards, and lawns are artfully landscaped with ground cover, shrubs, rock foundations, hearty pines and oaks.

A-grade Shasta Union High School District, neighboring Shasta College

Public schools are within the Columbia Elementary School District, which is given an A-minus on Niche and the Shasta Union High School District, which earns an A. Kids start at Columbia School and move on to Mountain View Middle, both graded a B-plus. High schoolers head to Foothill High, which gets an A-minus and features a Career Center that offers job opportunities and helps with college presentations. Shasta College’s main campus occupies 337 acres and is less than 2 miles east of the neighborhood. "We're one of the top California Community Colleges to be recognized for our innovative programs," says Peter Griggs, marketing, communications, and public relations director for Shasta College. "Our downtown Health Sciences campus, about a 10-minute drive from here, offers programs in dental hygiene, physical therapy and nursing. At the main Redding campus, we have a full working farm with cows, goats, pigs, and greenhouses. Our industrial technology, forestry and heavy equipment programs are well respected by employers." Students looking to transfer can graduate with an Associate Degree for Transfer, which guarantees admittance into a California State University. Shasta College also boasts a Regional Public Safety Training Center, which Griggs says "is producing trained firefighters that are so essential to the North State." In 2024, Shasta College celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Holiday lights and Harvest Festival

There's always a holiday event going on not far from Hawley, including the spectacular Redding Garden of Lights from November through January at the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens on the Sacramento River, about a 10-minute, 4-mile drive southwest. On a smaller scale, Shasta College has been hosting its annual Harvest Fest since 2008 at Ross Ranch, about a mile north of the college, to support the campus farm.
