Redding's resilient hillside community
Today, Quartz Hill is one of Redding's most desired neighborhoods, just 2 miles across the Sacramento River from downtown Redding. Its sprawling communities are surrounded by acres of natural space. However, on these natural hillsides, the troubles of yesterday are still visible. "This is a really nice area, but there are still signs of the fire, like burned trees on the hillside. Most people don't mind, but it's just a reminder of how much damage it caused," says Realtor Dennis Morgan with Banner Real Estate, who's lived in Redding since the 1970s. Morgan is referring to the 2018 Carr Fire, one of the largest wildfires in California's history, which burned hundreds of homes in northwest Redding. While the fire was a dark time, locals found optimism in the ashes and the residential communities emerged stronger than ever. Morgan says, "So many homes were lost that it's made the remaining ones even more in demand because people recognize that this is a great area to live in."

Spacious communities surrounded by open space
The neighborhood has multiple housing developments separated by acres of natural space. River Park Highlands is closest to the downtown activity, on the neighborhood's east side. Along its winding drives and cul-de-sacs, homes sit on midsize lots with wide driveways and grassy backyards with enough room for a pool. Many back up to natural hillside covered with manzanita shrubs, giving added privacy. Its three-to-four-bedroom New Traditional and Mediterranean-style homes range from $400,000 to $700,000. Just up Quartz Hill Road, Bel Air Estates and River Ridge Terrace offer a similar layout and home styles, ranging from $400,000 to $800,000 for options with south-facing views of mountains in the distance. Land Park and Stanford Hills are small communities on the neighborhood's west side. Land Park's New Traditional homes range from $500,000 to $800,000. Stanford Hills has one main drive, where Mediterranean-inspired mansions and multiacre estates range from $750,000 to $1.3 million.

Hiking trails throughout the neighborhood
The neighborhood's extensive natural space is covered with hiking trails. Residents can often access these trails right outside of their home, such as the Stanford Hill Trailhead on the neighborhood's west side. The Sacramento River Trail is accessible at Lake Redding Park, just over a mile south of many homes. This trail goes for miles along the river's tree-studded banks. Lake Redding Park also has sand volleyball courts and a gazebo for relaxing by the river. Caldwell Park, next door, is the city's largest recreation space. It has athletic fields, a skate park, a playground and pools for kids and adults. Golfers can play rounds at the Lake Redding Golf Course, a public 18-hole track that also offers memberships.

Work across the river in downtown Redding
This is a car-dependent neighborhood, and there are no bus stops in the area. Most folks have a short 2-mile commute across the river to work in downtown Redding. Downtown's two hospitals are prominent employers, and there's a growing business scene in the heart of downtown, around the recently revitalized Market Street. The 2018 Carr Fire
Quartz Hill was one of the most devastated areas of Redding after the 2018 Carr Fire. It burned over 200,000 acres of Shasta County and Trinity County, including hundreds of homes in northwest Redding. While the community has relatively recovered, signs of the fire, like burned trees and shrubs, remain on the neighborhood's natural hillsides. It's important for residents to have an established evacuation plan in preparation for fires of this size. Small brush fires are still common in the hills around Redding. The city encourages residents to prevent future disasters by removing combustible brush from the perimeter of homes to keep fires from spreading into residential communities.
You can still see the scar left by the Carr Fire in 2018.
