Suburban quietude in west Redding close to essentials and downtown

In west Redding, the Ridgeview neighborhood offers easy access to downtown Redding and the Sacramento River — from within a quiet residential enclave where sidewalks lead to a community park and a paved nature trail. Many homes enjoy the scenic backdrop of an open wilderness area in that’s almost as large as the entire residential footprint. Placer Street and Buenaventura Boulevard offer quick connection to major highways, so it’s easy to reach all of Redding and come home to suburban serenity.

Mary Lake Park is the center of the neighborhood and brings the community together.

Picnic and play at Ridgeview Park, bike Blue Gravel Mine Trail

Tucked between homes in northern Ridgeview, the 6-acre Ridgeview Park is a well-maintained greenspace with two large lawns. Friends meet here for pickup basketball, residents stroll paved circular walkways and kids enjoy the playground. Hikers and bikers hit the paved Blue Gravel Mine Trail that parallels Buenaventura Boulevard along the northeast edge of Ridgeview. It’s far enough away from Buenaventura to feel like a trek in the woodlands and among wildflowers in the spring. The trail leads past a small canyon with a shallow creek and the historic Blue Gravel Mine — a name originating from the bluish gravel created by gold mining. Just 3 miles north of Ridgeview, the Sacramento River Trail opens up at the South Diestelhorst Bridge Trailhead.

Well-kept homes built from the 1960s through the 1990s

Remodeled single-level and larger two-story homes built near the neighborhood park in the 1960s and 1970s range from $300,000 to $550,000. In the rest of Ridgeview, multigable stucco homes built in the 1980s through the 1990s vary from $400,000 to $600,000. Creatively landscaped yards with flowering bushes and tall cypress trees show pride of ownership, and backyard pools are popular for cooling off in the Redding heat. “These are pretty sought-after homes in the West Redding area,” says Tanya Mewhirter, Redding native and broker with the Shasta Realty Group since 2011. “They're all considered well-kept, and many of them were built in the late 1990s so they're more contemporary.” Cumberland Drive meets Teton Drive in the heart of Ridgeview, creating the only neighborhood throughway, and most streets that branch off this central corridor end in cul-de-sacs.

Dine and grocery shop in Placer Heights Plaza, kick back at Fall River Brewery

In Placer Heights Plaza at the neighborhood’s northern edge, locals can grocery shop at Holiday Market. In the same plaza, Le Testimony Organic Bistro specializes in savory crepes. Traveling east on Placer Street, Ridgeview’s northern border, it’s only about a 2-mile drive to downtown breweries, restaurants and cafes. Just outside the southern end of Ridgeview, Fall River Brewing Co. has a varying selection of craft beer and seltzers, along with an agenda of weekly events from yoga classes to Foodie Fridays to live music. “The main warehouse is where they actually brew their beer,” says Mewhirter. “And they have a nice outdoor patio and different food trucks that rotate there, plus a whole lot of indoor games like cornhole and bingo.”

Severe heat and some fire risk

Redding is famously hot and has experienced some devastating fires in recent decades. The climate risk data foundation First Street gives Ridgeview a 7 out of 10 for severe fire factor and an 8 out of 10 for severe heat factor, so homebuyers need to obtain proper fire insurance.

Easy drive into downtown, 10 miles to Redding Regional Airport

Commuting outside the neighborhood is typically by car; however, Redding Area Bus Authority stops can be found outside the community along Placer Street and Buenaventura Boulevard. The Redding Regional Airport is a 10-mile, 20-minute drive southeast of central Ridgeview.

Vine and Dine downtown or whoop it up at the Redding Rodeo

Events are always happening downtown and along the Sacramento River. In May, City Hall hosts the annual Vine and Dine, and the wild four-day Redding Rodeo draws thousands to the Redding Rodeo Grounds, overlooking the river at Turtle Bay Park.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
