Comfortable Southwest Redding suburb backing up to protected open space
Some might describe Westwood as a sleepy little southwest Redding subdivision. Others may see it as the neighbor to a 1,500-acre Gore Ranch control-burn site that helped to reduce the risk of wildfire impact across Redding's dry, hot terrain. This open habitat that spreads out behind Westwood, also known as the McConnell Foundation, is a permanently protected backdrop. Melinda Cole, resident since 2005 and office manager at the neighborhood Sycamore Elementary, says, "I love how quiet it is. Of course, you'll hear kids playing, but you can go outside many times and just hear birds. Westwood's a good little nook that's been here a long time and maintained its charm. Even some newer neighborhoods don't stay as nice as Westwood."
At its heart is a collection of single-family homes built between the 1950s and 1970s. Neat rows of streets start west of Highway 273 and end at the protected buffer. The neighborhood's eastern border parallels South Market Street for a direct line into Downtown Redding. Besides its primarily residential footprint of single-family homes and two small mobile home parks on the perimeter, this compact community contains a well-equipped shopping plaza, an elementary school and a small community church.

Mobile, midcentury and 1970s single-family homes
Mobile homes built in the 1970s in Westwood start at $35,000 and go up to $70,000 for those recently renovated. Siding, brick and stucco ranch-style homes start around $300,000 for midcentury builds and can go up to $400,000 for mid-1970s homes with backyard pools. Homes sit closely together and close to the paved roadways trimmed with sloping curbs. Established oak, maple and crepe myrtle trees lend shade and color. "Many of my neighbors have lived here longer than I have," adds Cole. "Most people who move here just stay here because the location is so convenient, and you get so much house for the money. You can have a three-bedroom, two-bath home with an in-ground pool in a neighborhood that's not expensive and has a good reputation."
The high end for homes in the Westwood area is around $400,000.

Public school kids can walk to Sycamore Elementary School in the neighborhood, given a B-minus on Niche. "It's a great neighborhood for new families," says Cole, "because you have the elementary school in the middle of the neighborhood that's been here since the 1950s. I mean, I have the best commute in town — just a couple doors down." Middle schoolers head to Sequoia, which earns a B. Older students go to Shasta High in the Shasta Union High School District, both given an A on Niche. Niche ranks Shasta High as the No. 2 high school in the Redding Area for Best College Prep.

Explore Cascade, Enterprise and Turtle Bay parks
Within a 1.5-mile drive east of Westwood, bikers hit the banks and berms on the BMX Course, and friends shoot hoops at the riverside Cascade Park. This 28-acre green space also includes partially wooded walking and biking trails, and a large lawn for casual sports and a playground. "You can also walk right through the trees to the riverbank and fish there," adds Cole. "Enterprise Park is where you have Kid's Kingdom, with a huge play structure that's not your ordinary structure. It goes on and on, and there's a splash pad with water-squirting lilies and pretend rain showers. People love to have parties there under the huge, shaded picnic area." Enterprise also offers a disc golf course and pickleball courts for sports enthusiasts. At Turtle Bay Exploration Park, locals walk the stunning Sundial Bridge, explore botanical gardens and visit rotating exhibits at the Turtle Bay Museum.

Westwood Village convenience, dining and date night options nearby
The Westwood Village shopping center is within the neighborhood, so it's easy to walk, bike or drive to pick up groceries at the center's anchor Sav-Mor. Westwood Village also includes restaurants, services and essentials such as Subway, a Kwik-Kuts hair salon and Dollar Tree. On the edge of the center, Waffle Bite restaurant serves a popular waffles-and-mimosas brunch. "It's great to have the shopping center right at home," adds Cole. "You really don't even have to leave the neighborhood if you didn't want to." When dining outside the neighborhood is on the menu, Sweetie's, about 3.5 miles north on 273, is the hot spot for barbecue. "I'm originally from Napa Valley, and we had a lot of options there," says Cole. "But I'm telling you, even though Sweetie's looks like it's just a diner, the quality is amazing. Everything is delicious. And it's not cheap, either — but you definitely get what you pay for."

Riding and roping thrills at the annual rodeo
"Redding is such an involved community; you have to decide what not to do. There's always an event," says Cole. "One of the most popular is the Redding Rodeo, which lasts for days. They hide loot around the community, and you can find it based on clues given on the radio. There's a pretend holdup at a bank and a huge pancake breakfast that I think set a record of some kind. People go by the thousands, and it's a well-oiled machine." The multi-day Redding Rodeo, held each May since the 1940s, also includes fireworks, a food fair and the Redding Rodeo Parade.
Downtown Redding is a short commute.
The Reding Rodeo grounds come alive with action each May.
