A versatile Redmond neighborhood close to nature

Southeast Redmond is a multifaceted neighborhood, with residential areas to the east and south, a business park to the north and retail on the western side. The city as a whole, home to about 74,000 people, serves as a tech hub: it's the home of Microsoft Headquarters. Redmond keeps in touch with nature with many outdoor features, including Lake Sammamish, the Sammamish River and plenty of parks and trails. Though only a mile or so from downtown and the large Redmond Town Center mall, Southeast Redmond allows for a somewhat slower pace, as there are few through streets and homes are clustered within separate residential developments.

Homes in Woodbridge, Woodside and English Cove

Southeast Redmond is primarily comprised of planned residential developments such as Woodbridge, Woodside and English Cove, which is the closest to the lake. Townhouses are the most common, but there are also single-family homes and apartment complexes. Prices typically range from $700,000 to $1 million for townhouses with up to 1,750 square feet. Single-family homes with 2,200 to 3,200 square feet run $1.6 to $2.5 million.

Marymoor Park, East Lake Sammamish Trail

Proximity to Marymoor Park is a perk for those who live in Southeast Redmond. The 640-acre park at the top of the lake draws millions of visitors annually. It features a bicycle racing track, rock climbing walls, and a popular off-leash dog park. Marymoor is also known for its outdoor concert venue, which hosts live music throughout the summer. Movies at Marymoor, a film series in July and August, is held on the park's large lawn, which quickly fills up with blankets and camp chairs. There's a selection of vendors and food trucks at the shows, outside food is allowed, and the events are also dog friendly. The 11-mile, multiuse East Lake Sammamish Trail is within walking distance of some Southeast Redmond homes. It's legal to use any path to get to the trail as long as it's not on private property. The closest King County-designated access point can be reached via the intersection of 187th Avenue Northeast and East Lake Sammamish Parkway. From that point on the trail, it's about a half-mile more to the public Sammamish Landing Park, which has beaches, docks and a picnic area. Southeast Redmond's other notable outdoor features include the Evans Creek Natural Area and trail, Sportsman Park, and Arthur Johnson Park.

Eastlake High has an A-plus grade

The quality of the schools is one draw for families. Public schools include Blackwell Elementary and Inglewood Middle, both with an A grade from Niche. Eastlake High has an A-plus and offers multiple options for earning college credits. The Washington State Report Card from the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction states, in the Lake Washington School District, about 80% of district teachers have a master's degree or higher, and 95% of students graduate in four years.

Business and industrial sites, big tech like Microsoft

To the north, there are industrial companies, manufacturers and supply stores. Some of the most prominent companies in the state have a presence in the city, making for a short commute. Microsoft's Millenium Campus is in Southeast Redmond, and it's about 5 miles to Microsoft Headquarters, located in the Overlake area. "I'd say most Microsoft employees live on the Eastside: Redmond, Bellevue and Crossroads," says Chris Tolstoy, a real estate broker for Keller Williams Eastside. Chris and his wife Apryl work together as the team of Real Estate by Tolstoy. The Microsoft campus has been undergoing phases of a multimillion-dollar refresh. While many of the amenities offered can only be accessed by employees, who number about 47,000, some are open to the public, including trails and green spaces. Other well-known companies with a location in Redmond include SpaceX, Nintendo of America and Amazon. It's less than a 10-mile commute to Meta, Coca-Cola or Overlake Medical Center.

Lots of stores around Redmond Way and 520

Many of Southeast Redmond's stores are located around state Routes 520 and 202, also known as Redmond Way. Grocers include Fred Meyer and Whole Foods. There are also big-box stores like Costco, The Home Depot and Target. Local chain, Blazing Bagels, has over 25 bagel flavors, plus sandwiches and bagel dogs. Pomegranate Bistro is known for its American comfort food, including Southern staples like fried chicken and shrimp and grits. Mac and Jack's has free brewery tours on Saturdays, and the environment is kid- and pet-friendly. Just down the street, there's Postdoc Brewing Redmond, with a rotating selection of food trucks and where Dungeons & Dragons players roll the dice on Wednesdays. About a mile away in downtown, Redmond Town Center has more to offer, with approximately 100 stores. It's also the location for many of the city's community events, like music series and themed car shows.

Bikes, buses, Sound Transit light rail

Known as the Bicycle Capital of the Northwest, Redmond has plenty of cyclists and added features like bike lanes. Bus stops are found on roads like Northeast 76th Street and 180th Avenue. With the East Link Extension, Sound Transit adds eight rail stations from South Bellevue to Redmond, connecting the cities. The extension from downtown Redmond to Marymoor Village has an opening planned for 2025. For those driving, major roads include SR- 202 and SR-520. It's about 15 miles to Downtown Seattle and 25 miles to Sea-Tac, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

I would like to see Redmond become more bike and pedestrian friendly in the next few years, especially with the light rail coming in soon.
