About Reisterstown, MD

About Reisterstown, MD

A generational community between Baltimore County and the city

About 21 miles northwest of Downtown Baltimore, Reisterstown is the last suburban community between the city and rural Maryland. This town of 26,800 residents was founded in 1758 as a stopping point for travelers looking for rest. Though the town has grown over the years, it continues to be a community of familiar faces. “It’s a family kind of place to live,” says Cookie Stone, a Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate who has lived in Reisterstown for more than 40 years. “I’ve sold houses to many of my friend’s children who grew up here, got married and came back. There are people who live here whose parents, grandparents and great-grandparents grew up here.” Today, while many residents commute daily to Baltimore, Main Street is a hub of restaurants, shops and events that celebrate Reisterstown’s distincitve small-town atmosphere.

Densely packed suburban communities but large lots on the outskirts

In the historic district, buyers will find homes dating to the late 1700s. “There aren’t a whole lot of modern homes in the town itself because land is just not available,” says Tom Mooney, who has 42 years of local real estate experience with O’Conor, Mooney & Fitzgerald Realtors. “If you move west of Interstate 795, that’s where you’ll start to find spillover from the expansion of Owings Mills. There are condos, townhouses and a few single-family homes – it’s all pretty high-density development.” The median sale price in February 2024 was $485,000, but prospective owners can spend as low as $175,000 for a townhouse or condo and as much as $3.7 million for a Modern Traditional mansion on 20 acres of land. “People don’t realize what a big area that Reisterstown zip code covers now,” Mooney adds. “They’ve kind of folded Glyndon into it, and it runs all the way to the Falls Road corridor, so people can get some pretty big houses on some pretty big lots.”

Community events, from a farmers market to a concert series, at Franklin Middle

Events in Reisterstown are typically held on the grounds of Franklin Middle School. These include the Reisterstown Farmers Market, which runs every Sunday from June to October, and Music On Main Street, a popular concert series held weekly from late spring to early fall. The annual Bloomin’ ArtsFest celebrates the beginning of summer by bringing the community together for a day of live music, food and art browsing.

Main Street is a hub for businesses, but only a few restaurants

Most of the town’s businesses are located on Main Street. “There are a lot of law firms and insurance companies in beautiful historic homes,” says Mooney. “When it comes to restaurants, it’s slim pickings up there, but they have a few places like The Harryman House that have been there forever.” Grocery stores, big-box retailers and chain eateries can be found in the shopping centers lining this road, as can unique local offerings like Little Georgia, which serves authentic Eastern European cuisine.

Interstate and back road commutes to Baltimore

Although Main Street is within walking distance of some homes, Reisterstown is a car-dependent city. The Maryland Transit Administration operates public buses all along Main Street, with routes leading to Owings Mills. Interstate 795 is the most direct route when commuting to Baltimore, although looping through the northern countryside can prove quicker during rush hour.

Reisterstown is served by the Baltimore County Police Department

The Baltimore County Police Department reports that 68 percent of all crimes reported in the Reisterstown zip code between 2022 and 2023 were property crimes. County-wide, property crimes saw a 32 percent increase in that same time, while violent crimes experienced a slight drop.
