A Reno neighborhood in revival
Wells Avenue is one of Reno’s most historic neighborhoods, but its best years may be yet to come. Developed in 1900, the Wells Avenue District not only features an abundance of early 20th-century houses but is in the midst of its 21st-century rebirth. Realtor Kristen Gil from Dickson Realty says, “There’s a revival going on in this neighborhood; there are a lot of cool businesses, restaurants and coffee shops.” The arrival of new businesses and residents, combined with this district’s emphasis on preserving its century-old heritage, allows for Wells Avenue to celebrate its past, embrace the future and stand out as one of Reno’s most in-demand communities.
Big servings and boutique shopping along Wells Avenue
Wells Avenue is perhaps best known for its ever-evolving restaurant and shopping scene. Gil says, “There have been new restaurants and new coffee shops opening up; there are also several Mexican grocery stores.” Since 1987, the big servings at PJ and Company have kept locals coming back for more, while every Wednesday night sees at least 100 motorcycles roaring down South Wells Avenue for PJ’s “bike night” drink specials. Just up the street, Von Bismarck serves diners authentic German meals like schnitzel and bratwurst with pints of lager and a fluffy pretzel as a side, adding to the cosmopolitan nature of Wells Avenue’s food scene. Several local businesses have sprouted up in recent years, from florist shops to tattoo parlors. Local shopping options vary from Mexican-themed groceries like the Marketon Supermarket to the local Smart & Final warehouse-style supermarket.
The Marketon grocery store in Wells Avenue has Spanish influence and carries a lot of produce.

Roaming around Reno
The Wells Avenue District is located close to some of Reno’s most popular destinations. Gil says, “You’re just east of downtown and its events, so you could walk there. It’s also close to a major hospital and the freeway.” The heart of the neighborhood is located within a mile’s walk from the Riverwalk District, while Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a 3.5-mile and 10-minute drive around the corner. Interstate 580, with a ramp located at the edge of the neighborhood, also puts skiers within a 35-mile and 50-minute drive from Incline Village on Lake Tahoe.
Riverfront strolls and resort fun
The Wells Avenue District may only have one park, but residents are situated just blocks away from plenty more outdoor recreation opportunities. The local, 4-acre Wilkinson Park is popular for outdoor sports and relaxation in the shade of its trees, while residents looking for a pleasant stroll can walk the riverfront promenade of the Riverwalk District. Snow adds to the area's natural scenery from November to March, although snow can occasionally fall as late as June. Golf aficionados can test their swing at the Grand Bay Driving Range, located on an actual bay with man-made holes scattered across the water. The Grand Sierra Resort also invites visitors to play a game of bowling or embrace the challenge of its escape room.

Historic homes
The Wells Avenue District is home to some of the oldest homes in Reno south of the Truckee River. Homes varying in style from Arts-and-Crafts classics to Tudor Revivals and Midcentury Moderns sit along an abundance of paved sidewalks adorned with flowering trees. This district has become a hotbed for builders and developers looking to renovate older houses, while people who crave being close to the action of the Riverwalk District in Reno find the Wells Avenue District an ideal landing spot. Gil says, “It’s walkable to downtown, and it’s an older, charming and up-and-coming area.” The older construction of this district’s homes leads to housing prices below the city average; some ranch-style homes sell for as little as $300,000, while single-family homes can fetch up to $610,000 and duplexes sell for around $1 million.
Many homes in the Wells Avenue district have distinct custom rock work done to the exterior.
